Ok here we go i'v looked on the internet and found out some options what i need to know is if i buy new custom made axles can i use the backing plates and break set off of a 8 1/4 (to get the bigger drum and bolt pattern)

also i read about green bearings but as i will be driving this car on the street would i be better with stock bearing set up

finally has anybody got the axles made i am trying to find out the specks that i can order them before i pull the old ones (i want to be able to move the car while i wait for the new axles) if not when i go to measure i am thinking that i need to measure the 8 3/4 axle and change the bolt center to 4.5 does this sound right?

Any advice as to the best way to go please help

You have a few options - you can get your axles re-drilled to the bigger bolt pattern, but thats out the window because you want the car movable still.

There are several outfits that sell axles - http://www.moserengineering.com - or if you go to www.moparts.com forum DoctorDiff there has a rear end business. You don't have to measure yours just tell them A body Big bolt pattern 8 3/4" axles and they know what to build you. There probably are others too if you google "mopar axles".

Brakes - yes you should be able to use the 8 1/4" brakes, but just make sure you use the entire setup, backing plate on outward. If you feel like splurging, there are a few disc brake ktis for the bbp 8 3/4".

Bearings - you'll get several opinions on this - many don't like them, many have ran them on the streets for umpteen bagjillion miles with no problems. I've put several thousand miles on mine so far without any issue so far.

I've used Mosers before, with green bearings, they work well. Side load? I don't know...I see why the stock adjuster type are better for it...I'd say get whatever suits your budget and run it...If you do get the greens, take some emery cloth to the inner rear tubes before you pop the axles in.

If you decide to change over to the non-adjustable "green bearing" set-up, be sure to save the factory right side Temkin bearing adjuster plate. These are now NA and they are getting hard to find as good used. I go as far as cutting / splitting the old bearing off the shaft so I don't ruin the adjuster plate while trying to press-off the bearing.

Hi there,I just ordered new axles from Moser with the larger BP. They knew exactly what I wanted and asked me which brakes I was planning on using.Since the rear end I bought didn't have any brake parts on it,I ordered the axles for the larger brakes.They can make them for the small brakes but you have to redrill your drums for the large BP.Note that with the large brakes the axles are a 1/4 inch longer on both sides to accomadate the wider drums.It took a week from the time I called them to the time I got them in Canada and they fit perfect.I also got them with the green bearings installed.They charged $315 for the pair with bearings.You should be alright with the brakes as long as you use the whole setup backing plate to drum.Hope that helps you out.

An option for brakes with the Moser axles is the 10" drums off of a 73-76 A-body with disc brakes and the 7-1/4 rear. They are pretty easy to find and bolt right on an 8-3/4 and have the right spacing.
