I have an almost identical set up. I have not completely tuned it yet.
See my post in the Virtual dragstrip section.

Lighten the car as much as possible.

Best money spent on the engine would be to get Mike Jeffrey in Nebraska to build a head for you. That will be worth quite a bit of power and he is very reasonable for what you get. He has built the Slantzilla motors and has done a very good head for me and others.

How much will it cost to have him build my head, and that will end up to be alot concidering i have to count in shipping, what i was thinking of was

mill .100 off
chevy 305 valves i think like 1.76 intake 1.5 exhaust
340 springs
and a polish
i can port the head in school so it is free  :D
isnt that about all i can do to the head? :?

Porting is pretty specialized. If you have some knowledgeable people around, then you should take a crack at it. Mike knows how to make 'em flow. Total head cost with parts and all labor will be in the $1000-1400 range. If you can do yours cheap, then it can't hurt to try one.

What are we talking in Net horsepower gains by letting the guy in Nebraska or wherever build the head for $1400

Just want to look at performance options and try to get the most for the least

IMHO, Mike's headwork is a great bang-for-buck, unless you know someone who will work/machine for free locally.

My 66 Valiant has run high 14s on 90 octane gas with a mild/medium cam, 3.00 rear gear, and Mike's head. HP gain with his head over stock is something like 20-25% so you be the judge.

You will likely not get as good a head locally, but might get it cheaper?

Mike has my new head done. I am taking my present head out there for a freshen-up. It will be for sale when Mike gets it done.
