 Post subject: Rebuilt Carb ?

Hi, I just put the super six manifold on my 66 Valiant But the carb from the junk yard has a weak return spring and is a little unreliable. It is a Carter BBD 8177S ( donar car was 78 Volare super six ) but the rebuild is $150. Does anyone have a Carter number for an earlier model 2bbl than only has one vacuum line and one pvc line, I am thinking it may cost less and be easier to hook up. I changed the acc pedal to the cable type already.
Also I did not draw a diagram of how i took the carb springs and cable off, does anyone have a diagram of this set up?

Parts store "remanufactured" carbs = junk, junk, junk and trouble, trouble, trouble. Best strategy is to find a good original used carb and have it professionally gone through with new throttle shaft bushings, etc. Second-best is to try to find a good original used carb with passably decent throttle shaft bushings and kit it yourself. Parts store remans never have good throttle bushings.

Give serious thought to grabbing a 2bbl off "whatever will fit" as a get-by unit and send your correct slant-6 BBD to the Old Carb Doctor (800-945-CARB) for a complete go-through. You'll spend about the same money as for a piece of trash from the parts store, but the carb will be good as new and reliable and economical for many years and miles.

It's not hard to make the '70s BBD carbs work well on the early cars. If you're using the Super Six air cleaner (a good idea), then you need the vacuum nipple for the thermostatic air cleaner. The bowl vent tube just gets left open to atmosphere, thereby functioning just like the early carbs' open vents. About the only fitting you have to cap is the EGR vacuum tube.

That sounds like good advice so I'll work on it some tomorrow and see if I can get it running better and I forgot about the air cleaner I really like the idea of having the Super Six air cleaner and the vacuum lines to it. Thanks Steve

Come on now Dan. I found a good rebuilt carb! After replacing the metering block, installing a larger jet, adjusting the bowl vent, getting the float set correctly, freeing up the choke plate, putting the gasket for the economizer on correctly and putting a different float bowl cover gasket on it works great! And oh yeah, working till 10PM with a flash light. :shock:

That there's yer lifetime warranty. The remanufacturer warrants that you git to spend yer lifetime trying to make it work.

Been running it for a month now and havn't touched a thing since the "re-rebuild". Better not after all the time and money spent on it! Think the next carb I get will be a Carter...or go super six if I can find one for a reasonable price.

I've noticed (and agree with) a general dislike of parts store rebuilt carbs. That being said, does anybody have experience with carbs that summit sells that are rebuilt by Holley? Not that I'm in the market, but just kinda curious...

No recent experience, but "Holley II" (Holley's line of reman carbs) used to be a better-quality, more dependable line than the Champion/Arrow/Cardone stuff carried by most parts stores.

I got my carb back from the shop today the mechanic said it was really really dirty and had advice on the spring connections.
My little 170 is really feeling perky, I can get this 3 on the tree to give a little chip hitting 2nd gear and the cost was the same as a parts store rebuilt , $150.
I highly recommend Glen Burnie Generator & Carburetor Co Inc. if you live in Maryland.
I learned that a carb in a box cannot tell you its previous condition and if it was responsible for your troubles, you cannot ask a box for advice or if you have trouble later the box will not be able to help you out.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
