 Post subject: Slant six carb on a V-8

I have two slant sixes running on Carter 2-barrel carbs. And they are great. Also have a Dodge pickup with a 360 and a Holley 2-barrel carb. Very hard on gas. What would happen if I mounted a Carter slant-six two-barrel on the 360? Or a 2-barrel Carter for a 318? Would it run too lean?

Chances are it would run lean, but it's hard to say. Is your V8 a Holley 4bbl? A good economy alternative might be the Edelbrock 500cfm or 600cfm 4bbls. There are tuning kits for about $40 that allow easy adjustments for cruising economy. I've also had good luck with jetted-down Holley 500 2bbls.

Ignition timing curve and jetting (and driving style) have big effects on mileage, but sometimes the carb is just not made for it (like most Holley 4bbls).

There is little you can do to significantly improve the fuel economy of the 360 in a truck. Sometimes a less restrictive exhaust and taller gears help, but only marginally. A multiple spark ignition system will help too but a smaller carb will only serve to choke the engine down and might even be counterproductive as you will tend to get deeper into the accelerator to overcome the lack of throttle response.

I don't think that it would be that big of a deal putting that 318 carb on the 360. Being in a truck and wanting MPG, you obviously don't race the thing, it would be easiest with a 318 maniold that is made for that carb, the ports are also smaller than those in the 360. I have seen that little Carter 2bbl on industrial rated 413's in larger Dodge trucks like D-600's, with like a 3" thick cast iron spacer between it and the manifold. The Holley 2 bbl that was used on most 360s was known for internal leaks. It was very feast or famin-ish as I knew guys that got fantastic mileage from 360s with it but most would only complain about it. I also remember seeing on some early 80's stock 2 bbl manifolds that had the BBD sized flange that had 318/360 cast into them in the front drivers side corner leading me to believe that the factory did use some BBDs on 360s. The biggest problem, though, that I see with a 360 in the 1st place, is that every stock 360 that I have ever seen the heads off of had dished pistons rather than flattops like most 318's had. With lower compression, an engine isn't gonna give you the power or MPG that it should. I had thought of putting a set of 318 heads on a 360 I had once with the smaller 318 chambers serving as a compression boost. If you are after MPG, your performance would be the same or better than with the stock heads with the better comp. ratio balancing out or even outdoing the smaller valves'
effect.
Now Carter DID build a larger version of the BBD that they put on the 383's. It had the same sized flange as the Holley 2 bbl that they used on 360s and 400s. In the day that they used both BBD's the 318 version was the BBD1-1/4 abd the 383 version they called the BBD1-1/2. Don't confuse the two.
One more thing (yes I know its getting long)... If you DO go with the BBD on your 360, do yourself a favor and swap manifolds rather than cheesy adapters. Go with the 360 manifold gaskets, not than the 318s stamped steel ones. You'll need the bellcrank from the 318 as well if you want the trans to shift right.

from experience, if you swap a 318 intake onto a 360 w/the small carb it works. great low end responsiveness and speeds to 100mph in my 86 4x4 ramcharger. (3.21 gears 30" tires)

however, it will not be as powerful as it is with a 4bbl or even the 360 2bbl, essentially it feels a lot like a 318 with a little more grunt.

Please correct me if I'm laboring under a misconception but it was my impression that the carb he was wanting use was from a slant six. It might not make any difference, but it seems to me that it would be even smaller than the 318 carb and jetted even leaner when installed on a 360.
