Hi - I am positive that this is a fairly obvious answer to this question for almost all slant-sixers....but as I prepare to install the super-six setup on my '70 225 in my swinger, I am curious as to whether or not there should exist some sort of gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds where they touch each other.

I am talking about the carburator pre-heater area directly underneath the area where the carb bolts down to the intake manifold....underneath the manifold, there is a surface that mates to the top side of the exhaust manifold, it is about 3" by 4" in size. It looks as if the exhaust will leak noisily out of this mating area if there isn't a positive seal between these two surfaces....should there be a gasket or sealer here?

Also - should I bolt the intake and exhaust manifolds together, such that they are effectively one complete unit, before I attempt to install them onto the engine?

It has been 7 or 8 years since I removed an intake/exhaust from a slant six! Brain is not cooperating with me today.....

Yes, it is supposed to be a gasket there.

You should install both manifolds as a unit, but don´t tighten the bolts between them, before you have it on the head.

Make sure you use plenty of high-temp. copper RTV gasket sealer with the gasket between the manifolds.

I am imagining that the cast-iron intake and exhaust, when bolted together, are a bit of a handful to maneuver into place while installing against the head.....any tips on having a smooth installation without smashing fingers / mis-aligning parts?

Keep your fingers under the exhaust manifold, don´t put them between the manifold and head...

It really isn´t that hard, when you have them close enough, you can rest the manifolds on the studs, get a better grip, move around... get a nut or two on.

Remember to put the little triangle washers on the right way!

the triangle shaped washer on the top studs have the "V" pointing down on the bottom studs the "V" points up. You may have a problem with a warped manifold which will have you swearing and praying to the ghost of walter p chrysler for help.

Pointy end of the cone facing the nut. Flat end facing the manifold.

Isn´t the triangle washers longer on the exhaust side, than the intake side?, or the other way around, I don´t remember
