Well, I'm in search of a double roller timing set, and I'm not coming up with much. I was planning on going with a Hughes set, but when calling to place my order I was informed that they have been on indefinite back order since September. In this thread: (http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... timing+set, Dan mentioned a combination of gears and a timing chain, but going through O'Reilly's, the gears are going to have to be a factory direct order, if they can even get them. (I'll know tomorrow.) Napaonline wants over $100 just for the gears. Are there any other sources that I'm missing, or is this just something I should give up on until hughes gets them back in stock? Also, while I'm at it, what about availability on an adjustable set?

Cox Bros fabrication has the Aussie sets for around $100 total, with keyways for timing adjust.

I believe the timing sets for the slant 6's in truck were double rollers......

So you might just try looking for a stock replacement for a truck.

Only the industrial truck/combine/tug/forklift/etc... (the yellow engines) had factory roller timing chains. Most trucks didn't have them.

BTW, the JP set from Coxes has 9 keyways for adjustments and has billet gears and true rollers - much nicer than MP or most other sets.

Some suggestions / info

1. I have opened up yellow truck engines , and can agree, not all of them have the double roller in there. most have the heavy duty single roller only. if you have it apart gor for the good stuff while it's apart.

The cox / aussie sets look great. is one on ebay now just seart for slant 6 and it will come up - or contact cox.

2. I just boiught a timing set from hughes - last month - I am guessing you had contacted them since then, and they ran out??

I called this morning and they said they had been on "indefinite backorder" since September. What part # did you order? I just asked for part # 6406 which is what it lists on their website. As far as the set you got goes, is it adjustable and true roller? I may just go w/ Cox bros. anyway if not.

My buddy also recently ordered one from them; probably within the last month and a half.

Maybe we wiped out their stock on the shelf and they have been waiting for that order.

No, no adjustable keyways there, I did the drill it out and buy the bushing set approach.

doesn't the timing set from a big block fit? for some reason i remeber hearing they do. although my memory is not the best...

The chain and one of the gears from the big block set work. There
used to be a Mopar Performance part for the other gear.
I think this info was in the slant six racing manual which is
in the articles at the home page of this site.

EDIT: The old Mopar numbers for the parts are
Chain P3690279, Crank Sprocket P3690280 which are the same as the
"B" engine parts and the special gear is the Cam sprocket P4007715.

I just got one from Hughes....mebbe MINE was the last one.

Or mebbe the guy I talked to was a bit uninformed... I think I'll call back tomorrow to double check. That true roller aussie one from Cox's sounds really tempting though. I just wish it wasn't $120.

From what I've learned about chains, if you can get a stock-type chain with all steel gears and have the gear teeth heat treated, the result can be at least as strong as a double roller chain.

Do stock slant six timing chains have all steel gears, or do they have nylon-coated ones? Often, it's the nylon teeth that's the weak point.

"Stock" slant timing sets, have a cam gear with nylon teeth. Most aftermarket replacement sets do not have nylon teeth. The biggest advantage of the double roller set is, the chain does not stretch as quickley or as much as the "silent" stock type chain, so cam and ignition timing stays more consistant.
