Presently switching to a dual master cylinder on the 63 Valiant. Got the right master cylinder, unbolted the old single MC, pulled out the MC, and brake pedal rod through the firewall, loosed the keeper that retains the "guts" of the old MC. Instructions with the new MC says, take two end wrenches and pry the assemby off the old rod. Therein lies the problem. I have pried, beat, etc., and the darn stuff (actually a cylinder) wiggles but won't pop off. What am I doing wrong?

I threatened to use a sawsall on the the darn thing, but instead gave one last effort with a really big pry bar and it finally came off. The rubber "o" ring is toast and probably has been for some time from the looks of it. Got an idea where to get another like it?

Removing the brake master cylinder pushrod is almost impossible if you try to do it by disassembling the old master cylinder (?!! Where'd those instructions come from...?)

Here's how to do it easily:

•Reassemble and put the old master cylinder back in place. Do not secure it to the firewall with the studs/nuts, but reconnect the pushrod to the brake pedal. Just attach it securely, you don't have to tighten it.

•Pull the master cylinder forward and place a spacer (chunk of 2-by-4 or whatever you have handy, about 2 inches thick) between the master cylinder and the firewall.

•Go in the car and give a stiff pull upward on the brake pedal. The pushrod will pop free of the master cylinder. Leave it attached to the brake pedal. (it helps to have a helper in the engine bay to hold onto the master cylinder, which will want to drop once freed of the pushrod)

•Bench-bleed the new master cylinder.

•Install the hard rubber pushrod retainer bushing into the rear of the new master cylinder's pushrod, if it is not already in place.

•Install the new master cylinder to the firewall. Connect the brake lines to the new master cylinder.

•Go in the car. Center the pushrod on the master cylinder, and press the brake pedal hard with your foot until the pushrod seats.

•Finish tightening the pushrod to the brake pedal.

•Bleed the brake system.

Dan you are missing one small detail. When you pull up on the pedal be very careful to not damage you brake light switch.

Both inputs are appreciated. I guess I am too old, too blind, etc., but I located the rubber "o" ring inside the rubber dust cover. I think I should give up on cars and go back to bass fishing. But then...I wasn't any good at that either.

I'll use the brake pedal when re-seating the rod into the new master cylinder. Learned that trick a few years back.
