I am refurbishing my head on my 1966 slant. Where can I get new valves and hardware? Also should I go with oversized valves? I am thinking this for work on the head:

1) Cleaning
2) Mill the head .010 for compression
3) new valves (over size?)
4) New valve seats
5) new valve guides
6) new spring shims

can I re-use the valve springs, retainers, and keepers.?

What SHOULD be done on a typical poor man's head rebuild?

Caesar

What you are describing is not a "poor man's rebuild."

For oversize valves check www.sivalves.com. $10 each, but very nice. 302 ford valves can also be used, but you have to change the valve guide diameter. (Not a problem if you're already having new ones put in.)

While you have it apart, I'd go for a little better valve springs. It sounds like a cam is probably in your future, and you'll want them then. Might as well do it now. I've had 340 springs reccomended to me, but I can't seem to get a hold of them through my preferred channels... checking on the specs for 360 springs at the moment. I should know more about that later. If they also have ~110 lbs of seat pressure and are similar diameter, I'll go for it.

milling the head .010 won't do much for compression, thats usually just a clean up cut to make it straight. did you mean .100?

right now, if everything is at stock specs I have 8.40 : 1 compression, not very much. I was shooting for 9:1

Anyhow Is there any literature out there, or sites that have recommendations as far as oversized valve sizes (what is good, what is too big, etc.) preferred springs, and what not?

Thanks

Caesar
