Will this conversion work for my car? My car is a 1972 Valiant with what I believe to be 9" drums. I am not sure if this conversion will work. The seller doesn't know much about it, he's just selling it. Here is a link:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWA%3AIT

That isn't the part number that wilwood lists for your Valiant and I can't find the part number on their site nor is it listed at Summit Racing. You could call Wilwood and ask them about it.

Looks to me like that kit is for a car with disk brake spindles.

The 9 inch drums have different spindles and different
wheel bearings than the discs -

My best guess is it will NOT fit.

Something else to consider is the availabilty of repair parts for the Wilwood kit.

I emailed him and he said that it was a discontinued part. Wonder why that is? Oh well, I thought it was a great buy. Thanks for the quick replies.

cory-
your car looks like a nice driver. keep away from aluminum hubs if you plan on a lot of street driving. this setup looks nice for a racecar that won't see a lot of speed humps or potholes. for the money you could buy a later a-body with discs and have everything you need for a disc brake/LBP swap.

Ok. Thanks for the quick replies guys. I will look into another Disk Brake Conversion from a later vehicle. Oh and why avoid aluminum hubs? This car right now is my daily.

I talked to Andy F about running Wilwood calipers on a street car. He strongly recommended against it, due to the lack of seals and protection on their racy bits. Additionally, I would note that the rotor thickness was pretty scanty for a street car. I would be concerned about warpage.

It looks like a great setup for a drag race car.

For a daily driver, low budget, street car I'll always recommend the factory setup from the '73 or newer A body cars. The late model A body setup bolts on, is cheap to acquire and repair, and works.

I sell a bolt on Wilwood kit but I wouldn't ever recommend it for a daily driver. Some race car parts work on daily drivers but most of them don't.

Ok, Wilwood is out then if I can't use them on my daily driver. I need these brakes to be reliable. I will do some searching in the "archives" for the parts that I will need from a later a body to transfer to my car. Thanks guys.

I've done 3 conversions from a pre-73 drum to a post 73 A body disk brake. Its easy, good and cost effective. The weak link in your 72 is the mall upper ball joint. The 73 and up use a larger ball joint, less prone to breaking.

From a 73 to 76 A body, you will need: UCAs, spindles, dust shields (optional), caliper brackets (I like the 10.87" 'cause you can use 14" wheels), calipers, rotors, proportioning valve, hoses and drum/disk master cylinder. The only parts not avail. over the counter are the spindles, UCAs, prop valve, caliper brackets. I used remanufactured stuff for all the rest of the parts. You most certainly use FJM spindles (although some say no...but they're wrong). This conversions should cost you less than $450 total.

Good luck. Mike

The next step up from late A-body discs is to use the '75 and later B-body rotors, which are nearly 12" in diameter. There's a number of articles on how to do this conversion, which is not much more expensive but does require 15" or larger wheels. There's a couple articles online about how to do this.

Mopar Action - believed to have invented this swap.
Big Block Dart - note that they take the other side in the Great Spindle Controversy, and I find their arguements quite convincing.
Here's one I wrote - it was originally illustrated, but a server update wiped out the photos.

I am in the same boat. The wilwod kit is nice but is not streetable. The clapper will clog up with dust and lock up on you. The benne that you have is that you have the big bolt pattern Doc Mopar normally has the part for the conversion for about 400 bucks

I need a disk brake MC and I am not sure what bore size I have? I think it is 1 1/32". Does anybody know what size I need. I am just doing a conversion from a '73-'76 A body onto my '72 Valiant.
