I need to replace the pitman arm on my sons 66 Dodge Dart. I've seen posts on a pitman arm puller - is that what I need? I can see threads so I want to make sure. Also how to get the new one back on if I have to pull it off does the tool "press" it on as well?

Nope you don't need any sort of press to get the new one on, it presses itself on when you drive the nut down. You may need to borrow a socket that big, but thats about it. And a nice hefty torque wrench....

Make sure you don't turn the wheels by hand... otherwise re-center the steering wheel and tires by hand before installing the pitman arm again.

A puller like this will be suitable for removal. Usually availible at hardware or auto parts stores, I believe you can rent these from autozone as well

I just replaced mine tonight. I went and rented a ball joint kit from advanced auto. it comes with 5 different sizes/styles of tools for seperating balljoints, one is exactly like the one in the link that Pierre posted. I used one to seperate the joint with the center link and then a larger one to get the pitman arm off of the steering box. I needed a 1 5/16" socket to get the nut off. The arm could only go on the steering box one way due to the way the arm is splined. it took about 10 minutes when I had collected the proper tools for the job. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I got a loaner suspension tool kit from o'reily and you're right took all of ten minutes! I used it to separate the idler and one last tie rod for total of 20 minutes. I fought for 1.5 hours with a pickle fork on two tie rods before getting this kit - man what a difference!

I had to special order the pitman arm for this one. my parts guy found it at rareparts.com - looks like moog quit making them for the prior to 67 darts back last summer.

Also had to get the steering column coupler box rebuild kit - which my dealer still had for $9! I saw the same thing on ebay for 22.00 - ouch! you THINK you're getting a deal, but not always!

This baby should steer like new when we get er done!

I hate pickle forks - I've tried them once or twice - all I ended up with were torn boots and parts that didn't budge, ended up using a puller anyway.

Next time around - which probably won't be for a long while I'd imagine - instead of rebuilding your stock coupler look at the ones availible from flaming river (summit sells them amongst others) - they replace stock couplers with a u-joint assembly for a slop-less joint. Pricy but nice units.
