Looks like it would plug right into the airbox on a sidedraft efi setup....no big curved pipe needed..

Hmmm

Recently two different magazines conducted back to back tests comparing a blow through carb to a carb in a box. In both cases the blow through carb produced more power. On a V8 the change is normally worth about 60 horsepower. Other than that both work just fine.

Bob, I don't see a blowoff valve. Isn't there a problem with boost pressure spike, when the throttle slams shut at 12 lbs, and 5500 rpm?
Also, I don't see why there would be a difference in power, between a sealed carb and one in a pressure box. The box is just another way of sealing the carb.

If the whole box is pressurized would that not create turbulence around the opening of the carb?

I can see where that would be a consideration, but the same thinking would apply to the design of the carb "hat".

Right. Just like porting a head...if you get turbulance in the runner it can kill the flow.

The hat shown in the picture looks like a very smooth transition to me...a lot smoother than a box. That could account for a sizable gain in flow(ie hp).

all else being equal, the box seems to be a bit more complicated with the fuel line and throttle cable passing thru to the carb. you would also have 2 carb base gaskets instead of one, plus a gasket around the lid of the box. just seems like more potential leaks to me. of course with the box you wouldn't have problems with leakage around the throttle shafts.
i know the pics are just of a mockup, but how is fuel pressure elevated with this blow-thru setup? it would need to increase to compesate for the additional pressure in the fuel bowls, no?

Most people run a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator. As boost increases so does fuel pressure. You can get them 1:1 2:1 and I think even 3:1 ratios.

We include a surge valve with all our supercharger kits and the price is included in the kit price. There will be a 1 1/2" pipe welded in the 3" pipe included with the surge valve in the kit. You will need a boost referenced regulator to maintain adequate fuel pressure to the carburetor. We recommend a fuel injection fuel pump and boost referenced bypass regulator which requires a return line to the tank. The fuel pump and regulator, good to 650 horsepower, are $305.00. A carburetor hat is better than an enclosed box for many reasons, some of which have already been articulated, not the least of which is more horsepower. They have also been known to explode.

After reading through just Chapter 7 of Corky Bell's Superchargers book I have concluded that a Supercharger on any vehicle is for race ONLY! It would be futile and expensive for a daily driver. Have I got this wrong.....tell me that I do, so I can continue to dream on

Help Me! I am addicted to the thought of a street machine daily driver that can uncork some major whupass when called upon.

Most definetly wrong. If they are for race only, why do GM, Ford, and I think Toyota use super chargers on some of their models. Just have to do the "SYSTEM" correctly

More correspondence from Bob Woods.

The power starts coming on immediately with a ProCharger and then the boost follows the RPM with max boost achieved at your max RPM. There will be a really good article in the next issue of Mopar Muscle due out later this week. They made 421 horsepower normally aspirated on a .030 over 440 and 878 horsepower at 16.9 psi boost with one of our kits and water injection. They were really impressed with how the power came on and how consistent it was pull after pull.

Thanks,
Bob
I can't wait for the new MM.   [/quote]
