Post subject: 8 3/4 rear swap
PostPosted: Wed Jun 27, 2001 1:36 pm
I would like to swap out a 8 3/4 read end (5 on 4.5" bolt pattern) on my '66 wagon. What vehicles (year and make) in the junkyard should I look for? I would like to keep the same tracking width.

Thanks,
Gary

Do you want to swap a "big lug" (B.L.) 8 3/4 *into* your 66 wagon? If so, do not waste your time looking in the junkyards for one, the factory never made a "5 on 4 1/2" A-Body 8 3/4 rear end.

You can find the B.L. A-Body 7 1/4 and a B.L. 8 1/4 or get the 66-72 A-Body 8 3/4 (small lug pattern) and swap-in the special B.L. axles.

While we're on the subject of 8 3/4 rear ends, what's your opinion on tapered bearings vs green bearings for a drag car?

I have had great luck with the "greens" in my dragcar 8 3/4. the word is that these "ball bearings" have less rolling resistance / "drag".
These also eliminate the adjuster and need for axle end play adjustment, a plus if you swap gear ratios a lot (like I do with my drag car). Some sets even have a "trick" o-ring on the bearing OD for great sealing without the flimsy foam end plate gaskets.

Most say to stick with the factory "taper roller" setup for the street or other heavy cornering setups (road-racing, auto-cross, canyon running).

Sorry for the confusion. I want to swap in a B.L. rearend and front disks. How can tell the difference between a B.L. A Body 7 1/4 and a B.L. 8 1/4? I found a 73 Dart in the junkyard that has a B.L. rearend and front disk assemblies.

Thanks,
Gary

Are the "green" bearings available in a regular parts store, or are they performance specials? What do I ask for, and where can I get them?

Charlie,

I'm not sure they are a "parts store" item. You can get them from Mancini Racing (www.manciniracing.com) or Randy's Ring and Pinion (www.ring-pinion.com).

I have stayed away from them because I like to hit the corners pretty hard...

Cheers,

Lou
