Parts suppliers that are selling replacement plastic drive gear with a hole drilled in the wrong place and no install instructions is how they are trying to secretly remove the leaning tower of power from the road.

Not possible with a v8. The V8s don't have a distributor pinion- the distributor shaft has a tang (like an oversized screwdriver tip) that engages a slot in the top of the intermediate shaft that drives the oil pump.

Swapping a Mopar V8 distributor is a good way to make a Ch*vy or F*rd guy's jaw drop because its so easy. Just note (very generally- as in "front" "back" "left" or "right") which direction the rotor is pointing before you remove the old one, and you'll get the new distributor in right. No problem of simultaneously engaging the pinion and the oil pump drive hex shaft. No chance of being one tooth off and not having enough room to set the timing. :D

my reascent work on a rebuilt 225 that was not running well as I thought it should led me to recurving the distributor. At that time I saw that the new metal pinion that I had installed only had wear( drive contact ) on the very bottom edge of the teeth and not evenly around the gear. The nylon gear that is so call missed drilled allows the gear teeth further down into the the gear mesh by about .100 of an inch. Installing this gear will require the shaft to be reshimed for less thrust gap, more work. On the nylon gear I was able to check the mesh by using a sharpie marker on the gear teeth and then running the car for a short time. I then pull the distributor and look at the area that has the marker worn off the gear. I feel that this was a big help in getting accurate timing on my motor.

OK, someone is going to have to explain to me how the predrilled holes are in the wrong place. (in dummy terms so I can understand). I could see if the distibutor shaft drove an oil pump (or in the slant six distributor gear case the gear itself), but having just changed out the oil pan on my engine, I can say that the gear simply meshes with the cam gear. What difference would the whole make? The dist gear is the same all the way around?

I'm puzzled by this discussion. Also how do you adjust the dist. shaft play?

Just found this article. When you consider the author's findings with the Factory rebuilt Dist. he examined, I think it shows that maybe things like gear placement and end shaft play aren't quite as important as we might think. Just a thought. I'm interested because I just rebuilt my dizzy and replaced the gear.

i'm going to need to get mine out and reinstall it.

i understand about the gears not lining up properly, but wouldn't the dizzy cap keep the shaft from moving up and down?
