Hey guys- Just bought an NOS Carter 1-bbl from eBay (thanks for the tip Dan!). Wanted to put a kit on it before I install it on my 71 Dart but can't seem to track one down. Not sure which number on the brass tag is the model #. It has 7172S and below that 3118647. I think its the 7172S but maybe I'm wrong? Any idea where to find a kit? Any kit preferences?

Another unrelated question- the oil pressure switch needs replaced. I've had both Napa and Strauss order them for me but they're always wrong. The ones they are getting are big with a large barrel at the end. The one on the car looks more like a spark plug. Hard to tell without yanking it out. Any thoughts?

As always, thanks for all the help.

7172s is your Carter model number. Try for a Standard-Hygrade kit; as of a couple of years ago they were of higher quality than other brands. I *think* the kit for a BBS is a Standard-Hygrade 1636, but you'll want to double check.

Not sure what you mean when you say they're trying to give you oil pressure senders that look "like a barrel" when you need one that looks "like a spark plug". The oil pressure sender for a '71 Dart looks like this:

How does yours differ?

I don't know exactly what you mean on the oil pressure plug, but I had a similar problem--the ones they kept giving me for my 62 had a very small thread on them (not like the picture dan has) and I had to use an adapter to go from the large thread on the engine to the small thread on the oil pressure sender. However, I did eventually get the right one with the right pn...not sure what I did with the number though!

are they ordering for a car with a rallye dash with an oil pressure gauge? the sender for that one is steel and about 1 1/2 inches in diameter by like 2 1/4 inches tall with a tapered upper section. the one pictured above is a pressure switch that you need if you have an oil light.

That would be correct for a '62, which for some strange reason used a small-thread pressure sender with an adaptor bushing (large male thread, small female thread). Eventually they figured out that one potential leak point is better than two and got rid of the dumb bushing.

I bet James has nailed it. Here's what the sender for a gauge-equipped car looks like:

NAPA Echlin OP-6451 is the one pictured above in my earlier post, and is the one you need for a light-equipped car.

Yup. That's the one they keep giving me. Ironically, the guy at Strauss actually asked me if I had a light-equipped or gauge-equipped. I told him it was a light and he still gave me the gauge-equipped. Thanks a ton for straightening that out. I was definitely frustrated.

Thanks again guys!

I've called around here in NYC and can't seem to locate a kit for my Carter carb. Hmm. I figured Napa would be able to get it but they weren't much help. Any idea if someone sells them online?
