 Post subject: A833 - 1st gear too tall

I have an 85' Dodge D100 with a 225 and an A833 tranny. I'm a country boy so of course I'm running 31x10.50's on the rear. Problem is first gear is too high. In certain situations there is a lot of clutch "riding" going on. I would like to get the gearing low enough so it would crawl without stalling. I do like the top-end (O.D.) ratio. I drive it at least 60 miles per day, 5 days a week. Lower gearing for the rear would be suffice but I do not want to sacrifice much of the topend. Any sugestions would be great.

Also to add to this;
My Dad owns a salvage yard, so any parts I could get out of the yard would be great.

I am pretty sure the A833OD has the 3.09:1 first gear. What is your present rear axle ratio?

I have no idea. Never had to look. I will be looking this week though. I did read in the Article section on the A-435. It sounds more of what I'm looking for with it's "granny" low 1st, but it sounds like it could be a pretty good job to do a swap.

You can go to a really deep rear axle ratio and the O/D fourth on the A833 will still give you a nice tall highway-cruisin' 4th gear. Using a 3.91 rear axle, for instance, and shifting into fourth would give you a 2.87 final drive ratio, which is just about picture-perfect for a 225.

The last 80's 'D' slanted pickup I stole an A-833 OD out of had the 3.55 rear ratio...I think 3.91's were for towing package or HD clutch and Hauling with the NP435...

I also would like to know what the difference in the ratio is between the stock tires and his current ones...some of the other 'off roaders' here went to 4.11's or 4.56's with bigger tires to put the ratio back into the "3.91" range.

Easy enough to calculate if we knew his stock tire size. My '89 D100 specs 225/75R15s, so let's assume that's what his '85 D100 originally specced. That is a 28.3" diameter unit. His tires are 31" tall, so if he started out with a 3.55 rear, he's now effectively got 3.24s. If he started with 3.23, he's now got 2.95. If he started with 3.91, he's now got 3.57.

Based on this, my best guess is he's got 3.23s or 3.55s in his D100. And yeah, with an effective 2.95 or 3.24 rear axle, both first and fourth are gonna be too tall!

To start, I would like to say, this is my first post in this message board and I am very impressed with the response. I appreciate everyone's help.

I'm thinking a gear swap would be the easiest, possibly a 4:11. I will be going with a larger tire on the rear and front, 33's. Would the rear have a tag or stamp for the ratio? Funny thing I've had the truck over 8 years and never crawled under it.

33's will not clear in the front of a 2WD unless you lift the frontend (not many options for this short of a home-brewed lift, which unduely stresses frontend components), or like the fenders to rub the tires on every corner.

Last set of 31's I saw on a 2WD barely cleared.

And FWIW - 31x10.5 R15's are closer to 30.5" diameter than 31".

Finally, my '87 door tag lists 215/75/R15's for the 'light' 1/2 ton, 235/75/R15 for the 'heavy' 1/2 ton. (Those sizes won't change Dan's calcs much).

I'll go with either 31's on the front (presently I have 30's), or a 2 inch lift with the 'skinny' 33's. i.e. - 9.50x33
