I can't get the top bolt of my manual steering gearbox undone because the exhaust pipe is in the way. The bolts on the pipe and manifold are always a pain and are rusted. I'm not ready to do the exhaust just yet so if I unbolt the engine mount and jack up the oil pan with a piece of wood so I don't stress the pan too bad, do you guys think the engine will lift the 1/2 inch I need to be able to get my tools in there?

Yes, that should work.

Worked like a charm. Last night at 10pm laying under that car, the thought of having to take off the exhust had me disturbed. I suppose it was just fatigue.

This am was a whole different story. I had a few minutes prior to heading into work, unbolted the engine mount, jacked up the pan, and had the steering out in about 15 minutes.

Now on to cleaning and changing out the leaking seals.

So now my problem is changing the seals. I was all set to do this tonight as the part is all cleaned up and now it seems that the seals I ordered from Rock Auto are too big, both the pitman/cross shaft seal and the worm shaft seal. Neither look like they are going to fit as the overall diameter is too large. At first I thought they might need to be compressed but my manual says nothing about that and even so, it doesn;t look like they'd compress far enough.

Any advice on if these are the right seals?

Pitman = federal mogul part #6859S
Worm Shaft = federal mogul part # 474131

Also, when changing out the seals if and when I figure the right ones, I dug out the pitman seal with a small screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. Cleaned out the remnants and everything looks good to put that one back in except for the large diamater.

In regards to the worm seal. Do I dig that one out in the same way? My manual isn't real clear and the only instructions I can see are in the power steering section and of course there is the use of a sepcialty tool that I don't have.

A search didn't turn up much help. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Stock steering box.
