gday,

this is my first posting.. had a quick look around, and this seems to be a pretty kick ass site!

anyways, back to the point..
last week i had a go at rebuilding a 2bbl carter for my VE valiant (aussie).
i put it on before i rebuilt it to make sure it went.. it did, but had a huge flat spot right through the rev range, hesitation when you gave it the boot, $#!+ fuel consumptiion and performance, and high in the revs it started to miss.

i rebuilt it but didnt make any adjustments as i wasnt sure at that stage, banged it back on, and the same problems as before!
i went to a carby specialist, who said to adjust the float level, make sure the accelerator pump is working, and make sure the metering rods are moving freely.. i found the accelerator pump on one side wasnt squirting as good as the other, so i fixed that, i adjusted the float level pretty much spot on at 1/4" ( it was way to high before, and the specialist said to get it "roughly 1/4"), and the metering rods are moving freely..

i tried it today, and for 5 seconds it went beutifully!, but then died in the ass.. fuel was pouring out through the top where the accelerator pump goes!

ive noticed (for a while, with the old carby aswell) that it builds up a fair bit of pressure in the line from the pump to the carby aswell

anyone know what might be going on (id rather not go to the fuel specialist, he was VERY vauge)

also.. i dont expect this to be all my problems.. i havent done the valve lash in a while, i found my vac advance isnt working, my new points have chewed out (maybe why it misses at high revs??) i have alot of resistance in my coil, and i cant time it because my timing gun wont pick up a pulse from my top gun leads!!
lol sorry to make it more complicated.. the ignition side of it will be simple, but i know somethings up with the carb!

oh that reminds me.. the old carb had a manual choke, and the one i rebuild seems to be exactly the same inside, except the choke was vacuum operated?!?! which is now broken, and theres an extra vacuum port (i blocked off)... maybe its a different model which ive done wrong??

thanx in advance, Cameron

Cameron,

I would have another look at the floats and the needle valve and seat. If the Carb. "overflowed" then something is wrong with the incomming fuel flow control. (needle valve and float system)

Once you have that working you can test-run and tune the other "fuel circuits" as needed. (that is, after you get the other ignition issues fixed!)

thanx for the reply doug.

could it be possible that excess fuel pressure is holding the needle and seat open?
its got the stock fuel pump on it (not sure if its the right one).. have slant pumps been known to cark it, or do other fuel pumps with better flow/pressure fit straight on?
