Ford was required by law to sell off the Autolite spark plug business in the early 1970s. Autolite has not been a "Ford plug" for about 35 years now.

like i said ford used to own them. didn't know when or why the transaction took place until today, but it's funny to see they are a sister company to fram now. i still associate the autolite name with ford. and they still make crappy plugs and wires.

Now Ford's official spark plug brand is Motorcraft - that's what they call for on my Focus. I wonder who makes them, if they're from Visteon or are simply another brand in disguise like their oil filters.

Whateveritsworth - Having good luck with NGK Platinum, although a bit expensive. I always assumed your spark was as good as the voltage behind it. Instead of one mediocre spark, it's now split up between 3 electrodes, probably making it weaker still, I still love to read manufactures claims and look at the decriptive pictures. My favorite one, which I admit to buying, was the fuel-line magnet, it just sounds so logical, how can you resist? Remember the old adage, if it sounds to good, blah-blah-blah.

I have never seen a 3 (or4) electrode plug make more than 1 spark at the same time, but anything I put them in, didn´t work as good as with new single electrode plugs...

But they look good on pics

The spark will jump only to 1 of the electrodes at a time. (whatever one is easiest)

If it consistently jumps to 1 electrode, that electrode will wear away until it's not the easiest electrode anymore, then the spark jumps to another electrode...................

Just takes longer to wear away the electrodes, but at the cost of the electrodes shrouding the spark from the combustion chamber. If you're worried about electrode life, get one of the expensive plugs (iridium,platinum) that has electrodes that don't wear away.

For best spark, you want the most exposed tip you can get with one electrode.......

the oil head BMW motorcycles come with a 3 electrode spark plug. one of the biggest problems with the mid-year models was a surge at part throttle. one of the easiest fixes for this was to replace the three electrode plug with a single extended tip electrode plug.

i did this out of sheer cheapness....15.99 each from BMW for the recommended plug vs. 1.59 each for the champions from autozone. go figure.

just my .02 on fancy plugs.
