Hey guys, are these modifications worth the trouble? Are my estimations far fetched? Thanks.

Mill head .050- 10 hp
Headers -10 hp
super six conversion- 10 hp
erson 270 cam- 10 hp

If these estimations are correct then i should be able to get a 40 hp raise from these mods which should make a nice daily driver package. In your opinions is this far fetched or should i not waste the money? They are going into a Dodge D100 1/2 ton pickup with a 4 speed w/ granny gear tranny and a 3.91 rear gear. I am not trying to build a race car, I just want the extra hp/torque to get around town in. Thanks

I would mill the head about .080, as you will use a head gasket that is about .020 thicker then the factory gasket, plus with a cam you want a little more compression. Don't know the spects on that cam, but if that is 270 duration, it might be a little much for what you want. (lose bottom end torque). I don't think your numbers are much out of line, but might be a tad optimistic. Remember optimising the carb jetting and ignition curve will have as much effect as one of those mods will.

Performance upgrades are not usually additive.........

There's the law of diminishing returns.

Each alone might be worth 10 hp.

Then add a second, and it's 8 hp more.

Third, 6 hp

Forth, 4 hp.........

Fifth, -2hp.... (mismatch, somethings don't like to go together)

note: I made the numbers up like you did, but you get the idea......

No offense intended, but adding up estimated horsepower gains is a very chevy thing to do, that's why every guy with a 350 and a cam and a holley tells you it's a "600 hp" motor. But those are all good mods and your seat-of-the-pants will note the difference.

Emsvitil's right. In addition, some modifications may not show much gain separately, but will in connection with another.

Choosing components and modifications that work together is important. Then doing the fitting and adjusting - that makes it or breaks it.

Super Sixing with headers sounds like a good combination. For daily driving, I'd sure look at Dutra Duals, to keep some intake manifold heat.

If you're having head work done anyway, milling for a little more than stock compression is a good thing. Mild porting would be in order too, I'd say. Just don't get carried away with either.

How's your ignition? Upgrading may or may not make more power, but it can help you keep it consistent.

Performance upgrades are usually additive. Every one of those changes has more effect when the others are done.
Except the estimates of each one are too high.

Question here!, all the 225 heads give the same amount of compression?, my electric of trust that years ago modded cars, is telling me that a head from a 75 Duster will give me more compression, is that true?

No, I think they are all the same.

I would go the early "drool tube" style head. Far more plug choices and look cool. 8)

No, I think they are all the same.

I have about 5-6 heads laying around being 'doorstops' at the moment.

For the most part the 1975+ heads are about 53cc in the combustion chamber...there are some manufacturing tolerance variations like our deck height problem...

My 1976 BL head was 53 cc (52.5 after planing)...the 1974 drool tube head from my duster engine was 54cc...and I haven't CC'd the 1963 drool tube head I just recently got with the 'button' type combustion chambers.

In general, yes they are all the same...specifically, you need to get in there and measure as there can be some variation...if you are to swap a head and go from a 54 to a 53 cc head, then go from a shim gasket to a composite head gasket, you ain't gaining...

FYI, I've been helping Ceej with a 1974 'project', and his stock head was 53 cc...after adding the Fel-Pro gasket on a 'stock' mill he went from his previous CR (not much)...down to a whopping 8.05:1 (time to get the Turbo out!)
