[quote]In 1976, my "stock eliminator" 65 Valiant, was running 16.6-16.8 with the 1bbl holley.
Car ran NHRA Z/SA at 2530 lbs without driver, 170 slant six.[/qoute]

How much can you modify in "Z/SA"?

When I ran, back in the '70's, you could "blueprint" the engine. The cam had to be stock lift and duration, but could have a quicker rate of lift. The rest of the valve train had to be stock, incuding springs. Any "stock" type ignition, MSD was legal. Headers, Stock pistons, and max .030 overbore. Carb had to be stock and correct for the horsepower of the engine, including the correct numbers. Stock trans case with full set of gears, high stall converter OK. Stock rear end for the car, any gear ratio, and limited slip ok. Body stock, full interior, and oem street equipment. Had to make nhra weight, in my case 2527 lbs without driver.

Has anyone else noticed how Charrlie has such a precise memory about all of his racing, even the class rules for over 30 years ago? It's simply amazing! You're awesome Charrlie!

I have a hard time remembering what E.T.'s the Duster ran or how much it weighed from just last year. Or was it two years ago? I forget.

Thanks Charrlie!

OK like the rules here in Sweden in the late 70´s, but if you ran 16.6 with a 170, and I read about a guy with a Duster running low 15´s in stock.
Then I read about this guys with clifford headers, Weiand 4 intake and Holley 650, 3500 converter, 4:10 posi, he runs 15.40?????????????????
I don´t get it!

It is a lot of little things. The guy with the 4 bbl etc. might have a tired engine, or maybe just doesn't have good cyl/ring seal, might need to tune the carb. My engine was done with a block plate and hand fitted rings. Cam timing, ign curve, carb jetting, header tuneing, etc. Couple things I did, 45 lbs air in front tires, straight 10 weight oil, lightest weight rear lube, chassis grease in wheel bearings, instead of wheel bearing grease. I used a short tire in the rear to cut down on the inertia/flywheel effect. Had one particular holley 1 bbl carb that was 2 tenths of a second quicker, then any other carb.

Just because something is installed, that does not automaticly make it better/faster. On my Cuda, I run a modified stock cast iron intake maifold, with a 500 cfm holley 2 bbl carb. I installed a Offie manifold with a 2 bbl plate, and used my 500 holley carb. The car slowed up more then 1/2 a second. I need to totally rework the carb/manifold combination.

>>>*K...Old thread here but I gotta get into it. I have been poking around trying to teach myself about current class racing, it's been awhile for me. I built roundy-rounds mostly since about 1975 or so.

My old Val (everybody called it a Dodge including me..sorry..*LOL**) ran 15.30's at about 84 MPH...*Been a long time but that's close. It had a 225 in it, the original engine kinda threw a rod a little.

But when I first bolted on the Clifford 4bbl it went slower, so I took the head off and ported the dickens out of it. Now it went even slower yet and I ended up with a nice burnt circle on the hood from all the backfiring *cause I always took off the air cleaner, I loved that racket it made that way.

I got some good advice from an old coot in a machine shop in Newport, Oregon, the next head I did I just raised the roof and let the port floor alone, that helped. Then I had him shave it for me, about .120" If I remember right and my remembering is suspect.

Then I got a rear end out of something, not sure what but it had 4.11 gears, *least that was what the guy at the wrecking yard said. The tires rubbed going around corners but I didn't care. The same old machinist ground me a "3/4 race" cam whatever the heck that was and she woke right up and ran pretty good.

The point is, like the writer here says, bolting on bigger sometimes ain't better, what matters is everything working together. I learned a lot with that old car, on a good day I could nip some 327 Impalas which always got their goat.....*EB.

One thing you have to remember about a car set up for Stock, it has had many things done to it that many street cars do not get. "Stock" has nothing to do with it.

I have also had a completely internally stock motor in my red car that ran like crazy. It only had an Offy intake, 390 Holley, and Clifford headers, but ran real low 16's. Why? I don't know, just dumb luck I guess. :D
