Since I want to install a 2 1/4 exhaust from the manifold back I understand that I will have to enlarge the stock exhaust manifold opening to accept the 2 1/4 headpipe. Has anybody ever done this before? Please share your experiences with me. I have a die grinder and a carbide bit. Would that be the correct tool to use? How far up into the manifold do I have to enlarge it?

They make it a 2 1/4" pipe, because at the bends its more like 2". The diameter of the exhaust manifold outlet is only 2". Actully, it's really a 2" flow for a 2 1/4" pipe. Here is something I'm working on right now. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/658846 Page 6 Frankenstein Exhaust

The factory bolted 2-¼" pipes to the 2" exhaust manifold outlet starting in '76, just as they bolted 1-¾" pipes to the 2" exhaust manifold outlet starting in '60. You can "port" the exhaust manifold outlet to around 2-1/8" (2-3/32" if you feel really lucky) but it's certainly not mandatory to get the benefits of a 2-¼" pipe.

Must be something wrong on their end. I can't get on the site either.

The guy at the local muffler shop said that he would be unable to bolt a 2 1/4 pipe directly to my manifold. He said that I would have to bore it out some. Did the factory use a special flange or something?

The guy at the local muffler shop is wrong, plain and simple. No special flange, no magic wand; the 2¼" pipe with a regular 2-bolt flange bolts right up to the manifold without any changes, adaptors or boring. Find a different exhaust shop; the one you went to isn't good enough.

I will have to talk to the guy at the shop. He is one of the better shops around here.

Doesn't look like it from what you've told us he said. Chrysler equipped lots of cars with 2-¼" headpipes bolted to unmodified 2"-outlet exhaust manifolds, with perfect success. Many of us have done the same thing in the aftermarket, with no mods or adaptors, with perfect success. That's a great deal of weight against your guy's claim that it can't be done.

Shops around here are not used to working on Chryslers, pretty much all they work on are Generic Motors products. If he says it can't be done I will get a 2 1/4 exhaust flange and show him that he is wrong. Thanks for the help.

Your exhaust man is way off base. I have 2 1/4" exhaust on the Valaint and it was a simple. He will need to weld the 2.25 pipe to the flange....mebbe thats where he is blocked.
If he is one of the better shops I can hardly imagine trying to get a 3" stainless exhaust where you live.

This just ain't rocket science. Jeb, I have a local muffler shop nearby that sells flanges for a couple of bucks each (I bought two 2" flanges in preparation for my Dutra Duals). Would you like me to drop by and pick up a 2 1/4" and ship it to ya? The ones I bought had slots for the bolt holes, so they're pretty much universal. Bolt it on and tell the exhaust guy to weld a 2 1/4" headpipe to it. Done.

I had similar issues, but at least that was with the Dutra Duals. The guy whined about fitting both 2" pipes in such a tight area, but (surprise) he got it done.

Sounds like your exhaust guy's just being ornery. It's been my experience that some older mechanics respond like this when you want to do ANYTHING non-stock, especially if the customer is on the younger side. I STILL get it sometimes, and I'm 40. Just let me know if I can help. This shouldn't be a big deal for ya.

I may be way wrong here(53 year old memory .....runs on 6 volts) but methinks the 318 flange is 2.25. When they did mine Wayner (my mechanic) walked out back and hacked one off an old pipe.

I will stop by NAPA and see if they have the exhaust flanges. He seemed kind of pissed when an 18 year old told him that he was wrong.

Stainless, forget it. The nearest decent muffler shop is 1 hour away. I decided to try the local shop. He does good, high quality work, just doesn't like to think outside the box.
