Hello all,

I just pulled my rebuilt KH calipers apart because the pistons weren't moving very easily, and I thought I had rolled a seal. When I removed them, I found some rust between the surface of the dust boot and the outer rim, so I'll scotchbrite that away. My question is, what lubricant can I use to reassemble these. I used brake fluid last time, but honestly, it didn't do much good.

Condran's book mentions a Raybestos brake seal lubricant, but I couldn't find any mention of it online or at the store. Can I just use assembly lube? What recommendations do you guys have?

There's an synthetic grease for brakes.

It doesn't seem to seperate out, and the tube will last you decades...........

For a lubricant *inside* the hydrolics, I used a product I got from J.C.Whitney - "Siliglide" or some name like that - a clear silicone gel that comes in a large tube and claims on the packaging to be good for brakes, O-rings, etc. It seems to work well; one big tube has lasted me for years.

I've used it sparingly w/ DOT3, DOT5, and various petroleum-based lubricants and have had no problems. I use it on almost all O-rings before I install them.

For lubricating the backing plate where the shoes ride, the self-adjuster, and external mechanisms, I only use Lubriplate; I found it far superior to the other brands of white grease I've tried. The other brands seperated into a white part and a yellow oily part; Lubriplate never seems to seperate. I bought some from NAPA.

Beware of other brands that may be passed off as "just the same" - they aren't!
