I am getting ready to reinstall the intake and exhaust manifolds on my car. My question is, do I torque the intake to exhaust manifold bolts prior to installation or do I install the manifolds on the engine, torque them to 10 ft lbs (sez so on the manifold) and then the torque down the intake to exhaust manifold connector bolts?

I saw this in a Hayne's manual (I know, I know) and it made me wonder, which way is right? By the way, what is the correct torque spec for the intake to exhasut manifold connector bolts?

Carefully read the Manifold Installation article in the "Articles" section of this site. You loosely install the three intake-to-exhaust fasteners (finger tight), then install the manifolds as an assembly onto the head, then torque the manifold-to-head stud nuts, then torque the three connecting fasteners.

what i did on mine was i bolted the intake and exhaust down and torqued them, then i had my machinist surface the mounting faces on the manifolds and then i bolted them on

i thought by doing it this way was a good way not to have a leak in between the two manifolds which i heard was a common spot for leaking

what do you think about this method?

Thanks Dan, I had read that article god knows how many times but had never noticed that part. Found it now though.
