You still need to change your oil and oil filter regardless of how much oil your engine burns. Gets rid of all that crap that collects in the bottom of the oil pan.

When was the last time you changed your oil filter?

My dad used to have a 69 Ford F-100 with a 390 that we used as a farm truck. Since it was on its last leg we never changed the oil in it, just kept adding some whenever it needed any (very often).

That was 11 years ago, and we retired it last year. I decided to change the oil for the hell of it. When I removed the drain plug, nothing came out. All of that sludge had been busy building up.

You don't want to know what I found in the oil filter.

Let the engine oil go down to the level at which it uses no more oil.

Then drain the oil and fill up some old 1 quart oil bottles. Measure to see how much oil came out of the engine.

If you get out 4-5 quarts, the dipstick is wrong. During my time in Slant Sixes, I saw several different sizes and lengths of dipsticks.

I once drained 11 quarts (yes, 11) out of a /6 because the idiot who owned it before me would open the hood, see oil leaking out of the fill tube and other places, and just dump a quart in without even checking the dipstick.
