1974 Satellite /6 w/ original front suspension bushings. As anyone in the rust belt knows keeping a Mopar rust-free is the most essential element to a long life. W/ this thought in mind I have started to spray the undercarriage of my car w/ a heavy rustproofing oil that we use in our steel warehouse to keep our stock rust free.The cost is free, and I sprayed the whole underside on my lunch break so I can't beat it $$$wise. My afterthought was "Will this oil cause my bushings to swell and detiorate" ?? Not that the bushings are perfect now, but I don't want to do anymore damage then neccesary. If I rebuilt the front end, what kind of bushings will be oil resistant ? All polyurethanes ?? Thanks Dave

Just drive it and don't worry about it... Maybe you "revitalized" them! :lol: I wouldn't put polyurethane on a "Mopar" front end if they were the last bushings on Earth! :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

May I ask why you don't care for poly bushings?? I had a set on my valiant beater and they seemed damn near indestrucable and quiet also.

Yes, oil will increase the speed and extent to which the rubber bushings degrade.

No, I'm not going to comment on polyurethane bushings. :-)

Use the thick tar like spray undercoating (from a gun not a can). It works good, but you would really need access to a lift to do a proper job. I've done the flat on my back undercoating job on jackstands before and will never do it again.

It's sort of just an onrunning topic that can be summed up thus: There are benefits and drawbacks to both rubber and polyurethane suspension bushings. Some people prefer the benefits of polyurethane, and the drawbacks don't bother them, so that's what they use. Other people aren't willing to live with the drawbacks of polyurethane, or prefer the benefits of rubber, so that's what they use. There's no "correct" answer to this one.

That pretty much sums it up, 'cept for the fact that the main drawback to using polyurethane front end bushings in a "mopar" is that they are garbage! :twisted: :roll: :P

Please see if you can find it with a search... I don't think any of us wants to re-open that can of worms! If I can find a link to any of the numerous discussions where I detail why they suck (and one or two members never actually get what I am saying, :lol: ), I will forward it to you in a PM. I'm not actually against "poly" across the board, only the crap that's available for our Mopars and the fact that most Mopar front ends (particularly the upper control arm) are designed to work specifically with "rub", not "poly".
