I got mine on Monday. It looks good. Is the black stuff on the lobes a nitrite coating?

I also noticed the lifters were the dumbbell style lighted versions. I will check the weight, but I am guessing is it is pretty good.

Parkerizing, that is a good coating for a flat lifter cam.
I will never know why Mopar Performance did not Parkerizr their cams, it's an inexpensive process. It helps prevent rust and holds oil for better break-in.

I know everyone reads directions, right?  Notice on the cam card 20 or 30 weight oil rated SF or SE, and GM EOS (engine oil suppliment) for break in. Most 30 weight oil, today is rated "SL". You need to look.

I thought that any letter further along in the alphabet ment that it was as good as all the previous grades and "better" to some degree. But I questioned the source I got that from.

There's been a lot of cussin' and discussin' about this topic. The point at issue is the zinc content of modern oils. Zinc is an environmental pollutant and modern engines with roller everything don't need as much of it as older engines with flat tappets. Oil makers have been reducing their zinc content so many folks have starrted using oils meant for diesel service or zinc-bearing additives. I'm still undecided on the issue but will probably, just to be safe, use something like Delo or Rotella.

Dakight,
Check the label on Rotella, Delo and Delvac. The new stock is 'SM' rated, same as new oil for gas motors. There is still some old stock on the shelves of 'SL' if you need a little more zinc. I was able to find some 'SJ' at a Walmart, it had been there a while on the rear of the shelf and had a 1/16" layer of dust buildup on the top

I got my 270 today. Sure wish the motor was closer to completion; I'd like to see what it feels like. Fed Ex delivered it to the wronf address but the guy brought it to me this evening.

could it also be that the instructions were typed up when SE or SF was all that was available?

I was wondering that as well and may call Erson about it. What made me question it is that in practically the same breath they say do not use API grade SA and or SB non-detergent oil. Nontheless, I intend to use something intended for diesel service. I believe the latest rating is CJ-4. Everyone is reducing zinc content because of environmental concerns but there are other anti-scuff agents as well. On top if that I might just routinely add EOS or something of the sort with each change. I'm not entirely convinced that it will be an issue with light duty operation but it's cheap insurance.

I did call Erson about the oil issue, on Friday, and left a message. Hope to hear back on Monday, and will post what Tom says.
