I got 3 VE Valiants... A ute with a 225, a sedan with a 2bbl 225 and a VE Dodge ute that was retrofitted with a hemi 6.

When I get the chance I'll look for the location of the numbers. At the moment these cars are garaged on the other side of the state in Echuca so I might be a couple of weeks.

I seem to remember having trouble finding the # on the ute when it came time to get it registered so you're not alone.

All the slant 6's I've seen have had 5 plugs.

Lift the cap of the distributor and look at the points... if the wire to the condensor is connected with a ring connector held in place with a 5/16 nut, it is likely to be the old engine.

If said wire is connected with a spade connector, it could be a later model engine. This doesn't take in to consideration that the dizzy could have been changed at any time in the last 40 odd years but it may help you.

thanks, i'll check that out soon and let u know what I find, like you said, if the dizzy has been changed, then it doesn't tell us much.

I'll keep looking though, it'll show up eventually. Curiosity just makes me wanna find out what this _bloody_ "BGG GBB" thing is though... I thought that maybe this would have helped you guys' figure out what year its from.

Oh well......the search continues......

sorry guys, looked in the adjacent engine mount area and couldn't see any #, unless it's been HEAVILY painted over ( not sure if it's been painted or not.
Must be a different year, by the way, I have a bunch of pics of the engine if u want to see them, only problem is I can't put em in the forum as they're on my comp.
If u want them, i'll need to send 'em via e-mail or something.

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!

On all my engines the no is located at the front of the block stamped just below the head.

Lift the bonnet, wriggle the radiator hoses outta the way and there it is, right at the center of the front end.

YES YES YES!!!!
I found the number very flukely about a week ago, but i am HUNTING for a decipher of the number.

LVE8D
9178

That is it... is yours similar???
If it is, then do you know what year your engines are? i know they are post 68 cos of the casting number, but if there is any other info about the engine that i can draw out of the number, i would love to know it.

Thanks for that though dude, are u in australia? cos if u are, then maybe this is an aussie thing.

Yes that is the right number!

The only thing I can tell you about is the obvious point that is originally out of a VE the original would have has SV1 or RV1 in the number... dunno if it was a HP 2bbl or single bbl

my number was something very similar to that and that was the number i got the ute registered with

i think that the 2bbl carb was introduced much later that 62... the "new" engine does have a 2bbl carter on it though, which i would assume is stock.
Thanks for ur help, it is registered and the old beast is runnin smooth, now its just tidying her up.
And i see you are in melbourene... I'm in S.A., near adelaide, its good to see there are some of us aussies on here.
:D

Yeah, you will also notice that i dont make it here often either

The 2bbl slant 6 was introduced in 1968 in the VE series, these cars had a "160HP" badge on the bootlid and the front guards.
