Hi al, i recently picked up a 62 valiant (australia), and I need to find the engine number so i can register it. The engine is definitely a 225 slant six, it's red (may have been repainted) and is possibly not the original.
I found a bunch of letters behing the alternator bracket, 6 figures... B's and G's.
Not sure if theses are it though.. isn't an engine number supposed to be numbers??
anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have a look below exhaust manifold, almost at engine´s base, there is engine number located.

The engine number on your '62, if it's an original or near-original-year engine, will be located on the block's deck, on a pad that extends beyond the head towards your driver's side of the car, below and outboard of the frontmost spark plug, and just inboard of the lower alternator bracket.

no, the only _stamped_ number is where the alternator bracket connected to the top of the block, under the #1 sparkplug.
stamped on the shiny steel was BGG GBB.

The other numbers are outdented from the engine. The one on the manifold side of the engine is relativey large, and I'm assuming that's the casting number.
The engine has about 5 freeze plugs, which are below the manifold.

5 freeze plugs tells us this is not the original engine (which would've had only three on the manifold side). Your engine is probably out of a VE or VF ('67-'69). I've got the VF factory service manual at the office; I'll check where it says the engine serial number is located. You're right that the raised numbers on the block are casting numbers.

yeah, i thought the engine was a bit newer. one of the posts here said that 3 freeze plugs was a pre-67 thing.
I just can't work out what this "BGG GBB" thing is !!! It seems that all these other /6's have their engine # stamped behind the alternator bracket. That's where I found those letters stamped into the steel!
I haven't yet found any other # that could be the engine #, the only thing that resembles it is a stamped # on the body, starts with "SV".

The engine number was stamped below the #1 spark plug on North American engine blocks, which were used in R, S, AP5, AP6 and VC cars. Early in the VE run, the engine plant at Tonsley Park (or Adelaide? Can't recall) came on line and \6s for the OZ market became a local-source item. It's entirely possible the engine was elsewhere on those engines.

so... what are you saying? when they opened up the new plant the factory workers had competitions on who could hide the engine numer best so poor bastards like me can't find it? Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me, this is a chameleon engine number!
The BGG GBB thing was below the #1 spark plug... that's where the alternator bracket attaches. Is it possible that those letters are the engine #?

Naw, not really -- just that Slant-6s were made in many different plants around the world, and the engine numbers weren't all stamped in the same location.

oookay, i've just been checking out a bunch of pics on the net of the /6's trying to find "my slant" the red one on the below page looks damn near identical to mine, except mine has extractors and no "super 225" sticker.
This engine I think is in a 62 val, the page is:

Mine definitely has 5 freeze plugs, so maybe it was a thing they did in aus. to put different slants in the 62 model? Unless the top of the 62 engine looks very similar to the post 67 ones.[/url]

From the VF manual:

"The 6-cylinder engine number is stamped on a ground surface located centrally on the left hand side of the cylinder block adjacent to the engine support bracket. The engine number prefixes denote the following engine and transmission equipment combinations:

*F30000* : 225 standard performance w/manual trans
*F40000* : 225 standard performance w/auto trans
*F70000* : 225 high performance w/manual trans
*F7H0000* : 225 high compression high performance w/manual trans
*F80000* : 225 high performance w/auto trans

Note that an asterisk is placed at each end of the complete engine number."

k, I'll check that out when I get a chance, (probly the weekend).
I haven't had much experience with slants, so are the upper areas on the engines similar on all models? Cos that engine on the slant web page looks so similar to the one in my 62.

Also, if the engine number started with "SP" would that denote a 62 engine?
Cos that's the # the car was originally registerd with... (The rego place gave us the first 2 letters to help in finding the number).
