Thanks guys vynn3, At 133.00 a tire I think new wheels is the way to go. (And I do remember what it is like to drive on bias ply tires) You really do have to pay attention to the speed limit! The Cragers are nice but I can get new steel rallys for 108.00 I'm on a budget and I don't have a garage so I am operating on the Rat Rod credo. That said I have the local boneyards looking for 14x5.5 steelies. If I can get them then I can put standard passenger car radials on em. That said, is anyone looking for 13" original rims? Or are they just junk that no one wants? |

Quote: The correct tire (diameter wise) is a 185 /80 13. But it's a bit wider than stock.
The easiest solution is later model steelies or rally wheels with the SBP (small bolt pattern) The steelies are either 14 x 4.5 or 14 x 5.5 The rally is usually 14x6 and I think 14x7 is available. For the 14 x 4.5 you need a 185 / 75 14 tire the 14 x5.5 and 14 x 6 take a 195/70 or 205/70 14 to get the correct diameter. The 14x7 would be a 225/60 or 235/60, but I'm not sure about tire clearance I'm using the 14 x 5.5 with 195/70 14s Would a set of 195/60R/15s be ok on cop car rims? |

| Post subject: | SBP tires & wheels |
Wheel Vintiques has SBP rallye wheels in various sizes. Summit Racing carries them. If you want bias ply tires, try Coker Tire. They have both 6.50-13 & 7.00-13. Typically bias ply tires have a more gradual lateral breakaway than a radial. New radials typically have a higher breakaway threshold than bias and will trounce them under braking. Of course, the radial has superior wear characteristics. If plans include going to disk brakes, you will need at least a 14 inch wheel to clear the caliper. The only SPB disk brake setup from the factory was the KH 4 piston. I haven't seen a floating caliper on the SBP rotor & hub. As far as how large you can go... I run 235/60-15s on 7 inch wide cop car wheels on a Demon with stock spring location. Others have run 275/60-15s on the rear on Swinger/Scamp without spring relocation. I think they had to juggle the backspacing, however. Hope this helps. |

Quote: Thanks for the good links to wheels and tires. Looks like I'll be keeping the 9" drums as the backs are new and I'm doing the fronts now.
Coker tire has bias ply tires. If all you're going to do is parades and show work, you'll be happy. As daily drivers go, radials are better.Money wise I'm thinking about 700 bucks to change out the wheels and tires to wider 14" rims. I would have to do this anyway if I changed brakes and spindles. What would be cool is if I could find some original size bias ply tires!... With radials, you have a choice of a tire with the same cross-section as the original tire, or the same load carrying ability. A 6.50x14 tire corresponds to a 165-14 radial by cross-section and 185-14 by load carrying capability. The aspect ratio of these tires is 82, which is close to the stock tire. Chrysler made 14" steelies with a 4x5 bolt pattern starting in 1965. 13s will not clear the KH calipers on disk brake cars. The small bolt pattern coupled with the high loads an A-body on the move can generate make them a bit flexible. The most annoying thing a 14 inch SBP wheel will do is shed the outside front wheel cover in a hard turn. Rallye wheels or aftermarket SBP would be better. The Ansen Sprint was made in SBP. It is a one-piece cast aluminum wheel. It was pretty tough. Sets of two and three have been turning up on eBay, A-bodies Only, and here. |

bias ply tires are cool, but are inferior to radials in every way. unless it's a show car i would not use them. |

If you are planning to upgrade the brakes, the best thing to do, would be:3. If the above options are not available, is there a list of aftermarket or oem parts to upgrade to the 5x4.5 bolt pattern? If I do this should I switch the front drums for disk brakes? I have always heard the first step to better handling is putting more (high quality) rubber on the road. My goal is to do the wheels/tires/brakes then figure out the sway bars and shocks. I live in the DC area so I have to deal with ALL types of roads. Thanks in advance Brakes first, either 10 inch drums, or better yet, front disc, and 10 rear drum. This will give you the 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Then do wheels and tires. There are many wheel/tire combos available for the 4 1/2 pattern in 15 inch or larger. I would not go with 14 inch wheels, as the selection of 14 inch tires is getting smaller. Do a search on this site. There has been a lot of discussion on brakes/wheels/tires. Many options, just depends on your goals, and budget. |

Do you still have the 4" wheel bolt circle? |

I'm using the Ansen 15 X 7 slotted wheel with a 205/60-15 A/S tire. No clearance problems and rides nice. Around $900 mounted, balanced, shipped to my door off the internet. Tire Rack didn't have them. |
