So then the rumors that Dan is a wizard are true... He can see through the miles, across the international border, right into my garage...

My Valiant "IS" Canadian. How does he do it?

What is different? Bell housing? Wiring? Ring gear? Accent?

Thanks. Neilski

Only his hairstylist knows for sure.

Ring gear, starter, seal plate, and wiring. It's the same setup as used on '60-'61 slant-6s in the U.S. and everywhere else. Prestolite direct-drive starter with a switching solenoid perched atop it. It's possible to change over, but is it working presently, does the car crank acceptably? If so…why change?

How do I tell what type of starter is on my slant or more to the point, how do I tell what type of starters it will accept?
Your '74 has the gear-reduction starter and will accept the later mini starter if you want to use one.

No reason to change, the car works fine. Just waiting for a sunny day, and gathering information. Those Canadians really knew how to build a car.

The weather morons are predicting sun for today... Hmmm????

Okay Dan... What's in the shoe box, on the second shelf above the grinder?

It has taken me a lot of years, dollars, and blood to realise it's best to keep my hands off whatever can be described as working fine.

*shake shake shake*...an answer floats up into view..."Answer unclear. Ask again later."

RobbMc performance sells a mini starter for the 66/69 HEMI 4 SPEED cars which used the direct drive starter. Those car use a 172 tooth flywheel and i dont know how many teeth the early torque converters had.Looks like with a drive gear change and maybe an adapter these could be a future option., or a source for the parts required to build one for a slant..

That'll work on the Slant-6 cars originally equipped with a direct-drive starter, too.
