I would definitely pull the trigger on a Wiseco/K1 package if they offer 3.504 or something close. I think the 3.504 ring is metric and so long term availability. I mean look at what we have to do to get there now, rebush rods, offset grind, piston buttons etc etc. Wiseco is a very good piston, the K1's are Chinese but they should stand up to as much as we can throw at a SL6. Sooner the better for me I'm right at the make a decision point.

ok. this is good. keep the input coming. Yes the .5mm increments are important, I can't tell you enough about the quality of the XXrings versus the iron rings available currently. The RA surface finish is about 3-4 versus the 20 ra commonly seen on iron rings. They are very round and very flat...just superior sealing all the way around. Doing .100 over with the same set of rings is possible, but oil ring tension goes well higher than necessary. .002" per side isn't going to make a difference on cylinder wall strength, so we'll go .104 over. We'll also come out with a .084 over likely based on the input of a few of you above.

These XX rings will always be available. We sell these rings to many of the other piston companies and Total Seal.-they are the standard we all use for sport compact.

One other bonus is we've had a new forging become available that has a better fit to this bore size. The pistons we're doing for Rob are 45g lighter with the same crown thickness even at .100 over than our +045's. We will switch the forging over for all the sizes and we'll loose loose 55-65g on the .025's and .045's.

Thanks all for your help. I'll let this thread go for another week to get more input before I pull the trigger. From there, we can expect new parts on the shelf in about 6 weeks.

Rob, I'll discount your customs to stocking piston priced so you're not out in the cold on this one and I appreciate your efforts to promote us. Right now, every set we send out keeps our guys running the machines here in Ohio.
Thanks Brian! This all sounds like a great way ahead for all of us!

The previous full piston/ring/pin/lock set was $460 US. Assumedly similar to that.

So Brian, what do you think, is there enough interest here to justify a run? I am eager to hear ;)

Brian;
Any news on the proposed or possible run on the 3.504 Wiseco piston?

So, if my math is correct (which it often isn't) I count about 7 guys currently interested in this new oversize.

As I said I'm in for the Rod/Piston package as soon as they are available. I will need a 20CC reverse dome machined into the top of the piston to get my supercharged compression ratio. But if they put some of these on the shelf I will probably buy another set of the pistons within 6 months. Depending on money maybe sooner.

The valve reliefs they put in are already about 8 cc's, at least by my eye - no measurement I know of yet.

Rob, can you ask Brian what the current valve relief volume is??

Rob confirming I'm in for a set. I'll wave in your direction tonight as I land in Frankfurt briefly tonight on my way back to the states =)

Hey guys,

I just got a reply from Brian Nutter at Wiseco. Sorry it took so long. I've asked for clarification on the "interested" part.

He answered the valve relief question and asked one in return that I'm not qualified to answer (Doc, Lou?...) Hopefully these will go forward and we will have the bigger pistons as a shelf stock item. More to follow...

Brian's reply to my email:
Quote:
Hi there, sorry for the delay. Things have been NUTS! I’m interested in gettings some .080 and .100 oversizes added (in whatever closest mm).

-6.3cc is the actual volume of the pistons. We went symmetrical valve pockets to lower price and the volume went up a bit from the original design. That might be able to be changed to a lesser depth---they’re extremely deep now. Any thoughts?

I will need to "mock-up" an engine to see have much room is there, I will try to do that later this week.

Deep is good and 6+ cc is not a big "hit" on the final compression.
I wonder if they know how thin the piston top got at the bottom of those notches. :? :?:

I might make them 0.050" less deep, but as long as they're not going to blow under abuse, then I really like the way they are. 6 cc's is not bad, and I prefer that so you can adjust comp over a wider range.

I'm assuming they planned for extreme use so they are strong enough, but Doc does have a valid question. My guess is the tops are as thin as 0.150" at the bottoms of the reliefs, but haven't measured.
