so hydraulic bearings would not work because it is originally a solid lifter block?

Is there a down side if the cam does not have a groove?

Buy the bearings to match the block.
If the cam does not have a groove, then it isn't a factory hydraulic slant six cam. I don't know if aftermarket supplies use cam blanks with grooves to make the hydraulic cams. For instructions on how to change a mechanical cam motor to a hydraulic cam, see HERE.

When I built my first good motor it was generally accepted Internet lore that the factory bearings had a groove in the rear bearing. I could never find grooved bearings.

I believe that can now be laid to rest.

The MP cam I got from Mike last weekend is grooved.

I had a Lunati hydraulic. I can't remeber if it was grooved or not.

Getting old is not for the timid.

i just tore apart which i believe is a competley untuched motor. it has std/std factory bearings, factory stock pistons, still had rope seal, blah blah

and none of the cam bearings had a grove, and the rear one had 2 holes.

I know the blanks OCG has are that way, and since they are low on original mech blanks with good fuel pump lobes, they will make a deal
on a new hydraulic blank if you order a mech camshaft, but ask for the
groove...(I did this on my last order since I am never sure if the new blanks are drilled correctly or not for the oil feed...)

I put a small groove on all my cams. If I wind up with excessive oil to the top end, I can always install a restrictor in the oil passage in the rear rocker stand, without taking everything apart.
