It closes the flap in the air cleaner snorkel so your engine has a faster warm up (decreasing engine wear, and increasing mileage).

If you don'r have the slinky hose going from the bottom of the snorkel to the heat stove around the exhaust down pipe, the thermactor is worthless.

What is the procedure on dropping the steering column so I can swap the Gauge cluster out? Is it just the larger bolts?

Also, there is a rubber nub/switch on the right side of the steering column. What is this? High beams maybe?

Unhook the battery. Pull the plastic column cover if still intact (4 phillips screws under the column where it meets the dash. Once removed this will expose 2 nuts holding the column in two plastic slider bushings to the dash structure...use a 7/16" deep socket and remove these. Using a 9/16" socket and extension remove the 3 bolts at the floor boards....

IF...your car is previous to 1974, there is a third nut holding the column like the two front 7/16" nuts under the dash near the brake pedal assembly... This will allow the steering column to lay on the seat and give you some room to pull the headlight switch socket, the instrument cluster plug, the two ammeter connections (3/8" wrench), an the wiper switch socket, be careful if you break the plastic retaining tabs they may not stay seated in the long haul when you replace the assembly...

High beams are a silver cylindrical switch on the floor near your left foot and the manual windshield fluid pump (unless yours is electric at the wiper switch). Unless you have a dash mounted hazard switch that one on the column is probably it....note that in the late cars with this switch,corrosion takes hold in the column and the circuit typically shorts out when they are used....
