I was cleaning out my workshop yesterday a and saw an old boot off a FWD mcpherson strut,looked like about the same diameter of a tailshaft. Surely there are boots that will do the trick,all you needis a knowledgeable parts guy.....now that could be tricky ![]() |

A repost from March 2004: "I had the problem of my NAPA old warehouse stock B&T rebuild kit boot split open within about one year of use. So, when I shortened my driveshaft to install my 8.25 axle I used a Rancho shock boot. The shock mounting end fits exactly over the driveshaft small diameter. Cutting to shorten the shock boot about 3-4 ribs up the boot ensures the boot fits almost exactly around the big diameter. I reused the old clamps but I suppose hose clamps at 180 degrees to each other or even heavy zip ties would work. Two 1/8 inch drainage holes in the boot are at the small end, should not be a problem as not much grease is down at that end. These boots are very flexible and I think CV boots would be not as flexible and hunting for the correct application would take a while. I am always looking for a cheaper and more clever way to "beat the system", so I hope this helps." Also, I think the boot can be installed by installing it over the cross pin on the shaft and then through the inside of the housing, emerging from the back of the housing onto the driveshaft. I found this out because the local auto shop didn't want to press their luck pushing out the cross pin to remove the housing. |

That is my experience too. But I could not find the parts to fix mine years ago and had a driveshaft shop convert it to a regular u-joint and slip joint.
