Brought the alternator and regulator back to NAPA and they changed the Alternator to the "Premium" version. Inside the package was the testing printout for that specific alternator. Apparently "premium" buys you a printout of the test for that alternator.
Gets you a fancier box, too. :D
Quote:
Although listed as 35 amp it turns out that is at 2000 rpm. I'm thinking that is alternator rpm because they may not know the diameter of the crank pulley on my particular engine?
It's just a round number convenient for the test.
Quote:
Consequently the engine RPM is likely near 800 for my engine when the alternator is putting out 35 amp
Depending on what size pulley's on the alternator (probably 2½"), that's roughly right.
Quote:
The rpm/amp curve showed there is no peak or cutoff...... it just keeps climbing up to 64 amps in my alternator at 6000 rpm.
Otherwise known as 2400 engine RPM, if your alternator pulley is 2½" and your crank pulley is 6¼" (which sounds small to me, think it's closer to 7", which would mean alternator 6krpm is about engine 2140 rpm).

New electro-mechanical regulators may smoke for the first 30 minutes of operation
That is true. I forgot all about that winding-varnish; it's been two decades since I messed with a new points-type regulator.

So my focus is on upgrading the Dart to accept 60 amp alternator.
Question about the 10 ga wire from alternator to battery with fuse mod:
What would happen if it had an under hood 60 amp gauge in it?
Would the underhood and dash amp gauges read half the actually total current flow because they appear to be in parallel?
The dash gauge won't read anything meaningful/reliable if you do the wire mod.
Quote:
My Dart has an underhood fuse box directly tied to the alternator, That box provides current to the HEI relay, Lower and Upper Headlight Relays, Electric fan Relay, and Power Seat & Computerized Shoulder Harness Restraint System. Maybe that can remain as is with the 10 ga wire addition?
No reason why not.

I was hoping the answer would be better like the dash amp would indicate whether the system was charging or whether a discharge is occurring.....call it a charge indicator light?

If the dash amp gauge is in the higher resistance circuit in parallel with the underhood amp gauge in a much lower resistance circuit then would there be a measureable lower current flow in the dash amp circuit when the alternator was successfully charging away?

If bad things were detected a look under the hood at the underhood amp gauge would be in order to see if a melt down was in progress somewhere?

Should I investigate the Megafuse thing in the article referenced?

Nope. You won't get a meaningful indication on the dash gauge. You can convert it to a voltmeter very cleanly without any hacks. How much it costs depends on whether you do the work yourself or have it done for you. Look at this-- stealth
conversion of stock ammeter to voltmeter for "it must've come that way from the factory!" appearance; that's the primo, higher-cost option. People have also successfully bought an inexpensive aftermarket voltmeter, torn it apart, and retrofitted it to a stock dash cluster with clean results. See here and here, for example.

Which Megafuse in which article?

It's got the external shunt info in your July 12, 2012 response called "Post subject".
