Water pump seals tend to hold up on the shelf just fine, for quite a long time.Quote: The problem with Smokey Yunick's assertion is...compound.
You evidently didn't carefully read the linked article, dude, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not my circus; not my monkeys.Quote: First, he is ignoring all the usual (and real) effects we see as a result of detonation.
Here. Read!Quote: A hotter running engine is just that much closer to detonation
No, not necessarily.Quote: Second, Smokey was a highly respected dude - but his adiabatic engine never was proven to work
Yeah, actually it was; see here if you wanna be distracted by that question, which is nothing at all to do with anything relevant to this thread.Quote: He died with that still under wraps
Yeah, you can tell by the big, detailed article in a magazine anyone could buy right off the newsstand, LOL!Quote: Third, I've read (no longer recall where) that Mopar developed the cast iron for their engines based on the lowest wear characteristics to occur at 180 degrees. Colder - higher wear. Hotter - higher wear.
Uhh…let's run that imaginative idea past some metallurgists and once they quit laughing and catch their breath, they can explain what's funny to anyone willing to listen. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Greg. Bye, now! |

OMG.... GregCon wrote: If the pump was rebuilt that long ago...the seals are probably getting bad by now. Water pump seals tend to hold up on the shelf just fine, for quite a long time. Sure- but make mine less than 3 decades old to start with just the same, thanks. Quote: The problem with Smokey Yunick's assertion is...compound. You evidently didn't carefully read the linked article, dude, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not my circus; not my monkeys. No, I didn't need to read it all. It's been rehashed plenty already. Quote: First, he is ignoring all the usual (and real) effects we see as a result of detonation. Here. Read! Not reading all of that aimless story just to wind up where we already are- an engine not burning within spitting distance of 14.7:1 in gonna have issues. Quote: A hotter running engine is just that much closer to detonation No, not necessarily. But in most cases, yes. Quote: Second, Smokey was a highly respected dude - but his adiabatic engine never was proven to work Yeah, actually it was; see here if you wanna be distracted by that question, which is nothing at all to do with anything relevant to this thread. It's all the same topic. Very relevant. Quote: He died with that still under wraps Yeah, you can tell by the big, detailed article in a magazine anyone could buy right off the newsstand, LOL! Are you really gonna cite Popular Science as a credible source? lol. That article is an much a PR article as any. If the engine worked so well....why didn't he capitalize on it? why are no racers using it? cuz it doesn't work. Quote: Third, I've read (no longer recall where) that Mopar developed the cast iron for their engines based on the lowest wear characteristics to occur at 180 degrees. Colder - higher wear. When you're losing an argument...attack the opponent lol. I don't hear any metallurgists laughing....in fact, since you seem to know just why it's funny - here's your stage. Tell us why. If you really understood the basics of metallurgy you'd know it's very much a science and you can very much formulate an iron (or steel or aluminum or titanium etc.) to have certain properties. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Greg. Bye, now! |
