I always was intrested in putting in a manual VB, but after owning a '91 240SX 5spd, which was an absolute blast to drive !!!, I got annoyed with the constant stop and go traffic, and constant shifting !!! Besides I was reading that TF's shift harder in auto-mode than when they are in manual-mode, true ? yea I will defenitly scan them and post'em up once I get them. I like trans star very knowledgable, especially on TF Lol !!

would you even want a full manual valve body on the street?
I have one in my Cuda, but it is not a daily driver. A manual VB in a daily driver, can get tiring in a hurry.
I have no problem with it...really no difference than a manual...just no clutch.

The key word in my reply was "CAN". Maybe I'm just getting too old. It is like a set of "raspy" glasspaks. For some people they are no problem, for others, they are.

On the TF-2 it says
Quote:
Instant full-race shifts; Puts the driver in command.Goes back-to-low at any speed. Fixes 2-3 bindup
by "putting the driver in command" does that mean it goes manual, or you can manually shift it ? the TF-3 is full manual, but how much harder does it wear and tear the tranny on the daily driver/weekend brawler ?

Charrlie as long as your young at heart brother it all that count's

just dont let anyone else drive the car, you will both be in for a nasty surprise when they accidentally downshift at highway speed.

One thing you have to remember about shift kits, the ones that produce neck snapping, tire screeching shifts are not shifting hard. They are in overlap and have the car in 2 gears at once for a second.

i think you might have that backwards; that is how smooth shifts are achieved, with shift overlap.

To much overlap causes the tire to LOCKUP not spin which causes the noise that is mistaken for tire spin....

So less shift over lap= faster gear changes

more shift over lap= locking the trans in 2 gears at once ?!!!

How is it possible to lock the tranny in 2 gears at once ? Are the low/reverse, and 2/3 bands applied simultaniously ?

should I use steel wool for scuffing the drum, or emery/sand paper ?

I have a Griner full manual with low band apply and trans brake in my 904. Trans was set up by Keith Long of 727specialists. Shifts are lightning quick and you will seldom ever hear a chirp from the tires.

One sure fire way to check for overlap is to watch the nose of the car on the shift. If the car is dropping the nose, you've got bad overlap.

Shift overlap is the delay in the first gear band releasing while the 2nd gear applies. (both applied at the same time) This is why c bodies (especially Imperials have "smooth" shifts) This "smooth" shift is bad for the bands because it is actually in 2 gears at one time. Customers percieve firm/hard shifts as something being wrong with the trans when actually it is better fot it (less heat & wear).

Slantzilla can correct me but this is how a trans break essentially works. The trans won't let the car move until one band is released. (both are applied)

You can see overlap on jack stands. Watch the tire on the 1-2 shift. My cheetah has none, the tire picks up speed when shifted into 2nd.

In drive the low/reverse band is not applied. In manual low the low/reverse band is applied. Most shift overlap is on the 2-3 shift when the kickdown (second gear) band is releasing and the direct clutch is engaging. Turbo Action valve bodies and TransGo shift kits both help this greatly. There are others that make good valve bodies, but many shift kits and "shift improver" kits do not help the 2-3 overlap problem.

I'm in the same boat you're in (haven't done it yet).

My guess is a transgo TF-1. TF-2 if you're racing.
