I doubt it's the pinion angle. Most likely failure is a 40 year old drive shaft that was not meant to see this type of continued abuse.
I hope you are Right Tom!

I just read the no snubber,,,,Maybe??. You can do that with SS springs but you have OE? front half clamped? Maybe , Just Maybe.......

Yep Front segment clamped - I can try 2 Clamps per spring on the front segment.
- It appeared to Pick up .1 of my 60' from my average... without the snubber.

Terry and Tom, Yep I am hoping the Shaft started to flex a bit too much at high speed.

Funny thing is when the driveshaft exited my drivetrain the Slip yoke never came out of the trans

Maybe the violent force of the shaft twisting caused the Bellhousing to break??

Here is the New Case for Ruster's 904 tranny V2.0 - Same internals (provided nothing is broken) will go from the broken trans into this one.

Thanks Dad For the Donor 904!

Greg, since the slip yoke didn't come out of the transmission where did it break off, the U joint itself or the plug in the drive shaft that holds the U joint? The bent driveshaft could have broken the transmission case before the U joint failed.

Looking at the driveshaft pictures I'd say the rear u-joint broke first. Things went downhill from there. Did it spread the rear yoke?

When tossing a driveshaft out it is not unusual for the bellhousing to break off the trans.

I did it in my Skylark and the car never even moved 2 feet off the line.

don`t forget to check the tail shaft, i split mine just by losing the converter, real heavy vibration on big end

Well I was crawling under the car to measure for new driveshaft and Noticed on the rear Pinion yoke, that one of the Bearing caps& strap are still intact. The other side one of the bolts that holds the bearing cap and strap broke and the other one is just plain missing - not broke - not sheared - - nothing there..

I am assumming the bolt did not get tightned correctly - or enough locktite or something to that effect.

That's may fault.

It's a costly mistake, but I will learn from it.

From the looks of things the Bearing cap flew off and then the shaft whipped and crinkled from there..
The front of the shaft opened up and left the u joiint cross and the slip shaft inside the tranny..

Thanks guys - I will be inspecting everything when the tranny comes out to replace the front case.

Hello Folks, I got A nice AL driveshaft ordered and soem new yokes too.

I am upgrading to the 1350 Series u Joints and it looks like I might not see any weight savings on this install :-( We'll see.

Currently I am inspecting the Trans and swapping the internals from the broken case to a New case. - I did Wipe the Pump Bushing so I will be getting one of those. and Possibly getting a New Park gear and I am trying to eliminate the Governor Assembly if Possible.

I will have to swap back to the other converter as the front of Trans was supported by the converter and input shaft.. this caused a crack in the pump drive on the converter. I am not going to put a Converter with a cracked pump drive in - I have had those go bad /crack on me before - Don't want any of that!

Here are some pics of the Broken Bellhousing/Trans Case:

Looks like everything in the sprag and rest of the trans survived okay - I am getting a bushing kit To replace the Wiped Front Pump Bushing and I want to put a tailshaft bushing on as well to be sure. I would like to eliminate the Governor Housing and swap to an Aluminum Park Gear to offset the Heavier 1350 u joints & yokes.

Nope. When you toss a driveshaft it will break any trans.

Greg:

I've spent ALL DAY looking at this thread and absorbing as much of it as possible... not sure if I want to get as many holes as you have with Ruster, but you've given me the inspiration to really take a second look at how I've got my Dart setup...

She's a pig, albeit a very light pig (even from the factory) but now Im seeing TONS of stuff and thinking... "Why do I need that?"

Uh oh... you are starting to get me roped in now...

Excellent job on Ruster! Just curious, how many cans of black paint have you gone through? LOL
