I've spent ALL DAY looking at this thread and absorbing as much of it as possible... not sure if I want to get as many holes as you have with Ruster, but you've given me the inspiration to really take a second look at how I've got my Dart setup... She's a pig, albeit a very light pig (even from the factory) but now Im seeing TONS of stuff and thinking... "Why do I need that?" Uh oh... you are starting to get me roped in now... Excellent job on Ruster! Just curious, how many cans of black paint have you gone through? LOL ~THOR~ Thanks Thor, This thread will always be here for your reference.. There are still a lot of things to be lightened.. Some of them cost alot of $ so They will wait a bit. I estimate about ~15 cans of Black so far.. Greg |

Yeah, I thought about that too.I sprayed the underside and running gear of my 64 and looks like most of it was on the shop floor. |

Post subject: | Update 4-7-12 |
I am waitning on a Few parts from A&A to Finish my transmission Swap / Refresh. While I was Disassembling the front pump to replace the Converter bushing I found that the engine running the pump gear with no belhousing to support it wiped the Gear and Back Half of the Pump section too.. So I cleaned up a donor gear and rear half of a pump section. The Final weigh In of all the New Yokes and drive shafts are complete: Even though I am upgrading the Strength and durability of these parts I am not Happy that the 1350 u joints and yokes and AL drive shaft ADD 1.44# to the Driveline Hopefully I can offset this travesty by Eliminating the Governor and Swapping to a Billet Aluminum Park Gear.. We shall see. While I am waiting on trans Parts I put a flywheel and starter on the engine - I fired it up just to be sure that I didnt break any thing there.. I would hate to assemble the trans and everything into the car to find an engine problem... It was all in good shape - YAY. Pics: New Driveshaft: It weighs 10.93# Almost 1.5# More than the broken steel one. Old Steel / Stock Driveshaft weights 9.57# New 1350 Trans Yoke for the 904: It weights 3.32# ------- .32# More than the stock one. Old Trans Yoke - Weighs 3.0# New 1350 Yoke for the rear End: It Weighs 2.31# (.20# Lighter than the stock one) Rear Yoke installed: Yoke Holding tool made from old Bed frames: - 1350 & Small Mopar. Hopefully the Removal of the Governor and the AL park gear will Get my 1.44# Back. Greg |

Just asking Greg, but why did you go to the 1350 joints? Mike even had 7260 joints in the blue Buzzin' car. |

Just take a healthy crap before racing and you won't even notice the 1.44 lbs. |

I wanted the over engineered stuff that Will be hard to break. I haven't had Much Luck with the Smaller Stock stuff on the dart or on this car.Mike even had 7260 joints in the blue Buzzin' car. I also like the fact that the caps are retained on the Outside rather than the inside. Personal Preference. Greg |

I'm amazed that your stock DS was that light. It must have been pretty rusted/flaked. I usually get 16-19lbs for an A-body DS with slip yoke. Lou |

Post subject: | O2 Sensor Installed Etc. 4-9-12 |
@USA Jon, Yep I dont want any racing stuff to put me in the ground.. I have had my share of smallish mishaps that no one was ever hurt in 'cept my pocketbook. @ Lou - I don't know what to tell ya - - I never weighed much of any car part before the Ruster project... This car was on Salty PA roads from'68-02ish then it sat in the back of my dad's lot from '02- 2009. Then The Ruster Project began. This was the stock '68 Valiant shaft that came with the car -& I had it shortened as well when I put the 8 3/4" In.. I remember the Driveshaft shop had removed alot of the scale when I got it back - possibly alot of the mass was removed by the rust and welding etc. O2 Sensor is in: (it's reading dead Lean 'case I dont have an starter in the car to run the engine) Greg |

It's possible your "lightened" shaft was weak and crumpled up when it spun up under overwhelming torque... Lou |

Post subject: | Finally Back In one Piece 4-13-12 |
Probably one of the best Friday the 13th's I have seen in a while.. I thrashed on Ruster for the Last Few days to get the Trans assembled and In the car.. When I ordered some parts fro the 904 From A&A trans I opted for the Billet park Gear and the Governor Delete Sleeve.. these pieces are for a full boogie manual Shift trans - If you can still get all 3 gears in "D" Dont install these - You will blow up or ruin something. The Weight I Added with the Driveshaft I more than mad up for Bu suning the Super Light Trick A&A trans parts. Hitting the TNT here in pittsburgh Tomorrow.. I dont want to drive to MD and have something blow up or fall out in front of any of the covalts.. Pics: Old Steel park Gear & Governor Removed - Weighs a Hefty 2.81# New Flyweight Billet Gear & Sleeve Weighs 0.690# Parts Installed: So after Putting the Aluminum parts in the trans I am now .68# Lighter than Before.. 2191.5-0.68= 2190.82# - Inching ever closer to the 2100# mark! I will make some passes tomorrow and post updates. Cheers! Greg |
