Post subject: | Steering Shaft Sheds A few Pounds 1-20-13 |
Well After Finally Getting the Car off the Jackstands and the Foam Padding on the roll bars and the New Belts in the car, I figured I Need to Lighten Something. Remember I had Ruster Down top 2141.7# Just Before I installed 57.5# of roll bars and associated parts. So I need to Chip away the pounds.. And small little things are about the only thing left to take weight out of the car. All of the Small things will add up. Today's Project was to Get the Steering shaft Lightened. The Stock Shaft Weighed a Hefty 5.416# The Idea Is to Replace the Main / Middle Section of the shaft with 3/4" 4130. This Piece is about 28" Long (Thanks Seymour) and it weighed in at 0.92# The Stock Shaft Ends Were Removed after Layout and Measurements were taken to Get the Proper Clocking and Length of the New shaft segment. The Bottom End was hollow inside which allowed for the 3/4" 4130 To Sleeve fit inside for easier fab up... The Upper part was solid and had to be butt welded to stock shaft. Stock Ends Were still 2.178# The Cut out stock Shaft Weighed in at a Hefty 3.206# I used a 90* Piece of bar stock to keep the tubes in correct alignment as I tacked them.. Then I finished weleded them. All TIG / GTAW of course with 4130. The Final Weigh In: All Welded and Complete: Finshed Shaft weighs 3.094# So I started with 5.416# and Ended with 3.094# so I Lost 2.3# off the Driver's Front ..YAY. Calcuated weight now: 2199.2# - 2.3# = 2196.9# Inching ever Closer toward 2100# again. Greg |

Greg, I am making sure that I am up to date on your car before the banquet this year. Don't want to get another lecture from you this year! Seriously though, as others have already noted, you are an inspiration to us all! Brian |

Post subject: | More Cutting & Lightening 1-27-13 |
Hello, Since I have Finished Putting in the Chrome Moly Roll Bars and Tubing, i have been Looking for areas and Ways to remove weight to compensate for the 57.5# of added weight of the Roll bars. This Time around I was able to Collect all of the Various seat bracing and Seat Belt Mounting Points on the floor that I no longer use due to roll bar install, and I also Did a bit of hole sawing and cutting on the rear doors. I was able to take a 1/2# out of the Brake pedal, and Also Lost a 1/3# By fabbing up An aluminum Version of the Water Pump Drive Plate. Pics Below: Lets Start With that Hefty Factory Automatic A Body Brake pedal, stock weight with the Pivot and Plastic Bushings and Pedal Pad installed is 2.746# The Pivot Pin (Which is just like a wrist pin for a piston)Weighs in at 0.206#. I wanted to Drill out the Pin in the center a bit bigger, but without a lathe That would prove Very Difficult so I just left it alone for now. For the Pedal Pad I was going with a K-car / chrysler Front wheel drive Clutch / brake pedal Pad It only Weighed 0.136# After All The Drilling, Countersinking, Grinding, Chamfering and Cutting, I got the Pedal with Hinge Pin, Bushing and Pedal pad Down to 2.100# For a Loss of .646# Final Weigh In: 2.100# YAY! After a Nice coat Of Flat Black: Installl in Car: Next Task was to Re-Create the Water Pump Drive Mount. It came from Mr. Gasket as a Steel Plate. That will not suffice any more. It weighed in at a Hefty 0.404# I traced it out some AL sheet. and Laid out all the Holes etc.. Final Weigh in: AL plate only Weighs 0.088# WOW! I also Had a Bunch of stuff that I was able to remove when I did the cage install.. I was able to Holesaw and Cut some excess as well. That added up to 10# YAY! The Totals are In: Brake Pedal: Initial weight: 2.746# - Final 2.100# -0.646# Pump Plate: Initial Weight: 0.404# - Final 0.088# -0.316# Box of Crap -10.000# Total Lost this Session: 10.962# Total Car Weight at last post: 2196.9# - 10.962# 2185.9# Still Inching ever Closer to 2100#. Greg, why not dump the pedal pads? Got to weigh 1/4 once Give the pedal a coat of paint with a little sand mixed in and you wont slip off !! Rick |

It's Not a bad idea,Give the pedal a coat of paint with a little sand mixed in and you wont slip off !! Rick The smaller Pedal pad Weighed 0.136# which comes out to 2.176 Ounces. I Just might Keep that in Mind when I am only 1/10 of apound away from 2099# Greg |

Two questions............ How much do YOU weigh? How much can YOU lose? |
