Smokin! Nice Job!

Can you do a quick run down on the combo as it is today? I haven't kept up with the changes.

Today was a good day for the Valiant! All I did from the 12.00 combo was put on the different turbo and a bigger #10 meth jet and it turned a 11.588 @ 115.66. This is still at 16* total timing and washer fluid blend. I changed to 100% meth and went to a 11.556 @ 116.23. We had a long rain shower so the sun was setting as I ran the final run which is the best ever.
60' - 1.639
330' - 4.710
1/8 - 7.311
mph - 93.84
1000 - 9.565
1/4 - 11.487
mph - 116.92

I must say the 100% Meth didn't help the ET much but it dropped the A/F from 13.3 to 12.2. Over a full point richer. I would still like to see it closer to a mid 11 though. I stayed with miner changes today to do some real comparisons. Still 22 psi and primaries only. It still has the bunny hop but the best 60' today went down to a 1.60. Although not on my best run. Had alot of fun today with this Slant getting lots of attention!
Later.
Get them 2nd-dairys open & working!....Even though you didn't see an ET change with the meth, it looks like you did see a MPH increase. Small but still an increase (this tells the HP increase, not the ET) and like you said...an improvement in the AFR.

Way to go, VERY nice numbers.

Wow. Keep up the great work!

We are scheming for a central US race location for next year or two to get West and East racers to meet up. KS, NE, or SD would be good places to think about...

Have you tried to work with the secondaries? Have you tried another carb?

Thanks guys, Never thought it would be this fast this year. A race fairly close would be great. I sponsor the Sportsman Class here at Oahe Speedway w/ Amsoil Synthetics so I do have some pull here at this track if you guys would like it this far north. They are really open to ideas like this. Let me know if I can help out.

Here is a quick run down on the combo:

Standard bore 225 (swather) stock deck ht, stock crank, bearings & oil pump (45 psi), all 1972 vintage.
TRW Forged w/ speed pro moly rings
Comp cams pushrods
Dual springs w/ e-bay stainless 1.70 in / 1.44 ex
1970 head - uncut surface (just cleaned), Bowl port, no gasket match
Erson turbo cam & lifters - 114 lobe sep - installed at 101.5 (rec at 110)
Stock computer controlled Dist (no weights) - 16*
Orange box w/ MSD blaster coil and wires
Custom Header w/ 3" turbo inlet and 3" outlet
Garret T70 Turbo w/ stage 5 wheel - .58 hot - .70 cold - P trim
Greedy BOV - China wastegate
Divided carb bonnet
BG Demon BT 575cfm - only using 1/2
Devils own Meth w/ 100% meth - #10 jet
Ebay intercooler and plumbing
GER 4000 stall
727 trans - Manual Valve body
Stock rebuilt susp w/ drums on all 4 (4" bolt pattern also)
8 3/4 3.23 spool
Aeromotive A1000 pump and boost reg w/ return and cell
Amsoil 20w50 racing oil - Amsoil Super Shift (trans) - Amsoil 75w90 Severe Gear in rear
26x8.5x14 ET Drags

I hope this helps if someone else out there is contemplating a turbo build. I shift at 5500 and traps are 5500. It took a few years of collecting parts on e-bay and jegs to get a list like this. Later

Hey Ryan
How come so thick an oil??? I would think you could pick up some speed with a thinner oil and if you turbo is oil cooled wouldnt it like thinner oil as well??
Thanks for all the updates we enjoy watching your build,
Frank

Hey Frank,
I have tried 10w30 petroleum and synthetic in this car and the 20w50 seems to keep the engine temps alittle lower. I had heard about quicker spool with a lighter oil but it didn't work for me. Also, the added (not noticable) hp you get with a lighter oil to me isn't worth it. I figure if I'm puting just under 2 HP per cubic inch, the best insurance is the best oil I can get. I've used the Amsoil Racing 20w50 for years in all my performance cars from 2.2L turbos, small blocks and bigblocks with no problems.
I would like to get it dynoed sometime but the closest chassis dyno is 2 1/2 hrs away and $100 per hr. Later

I am in the process of starting a turbo /6 setup in my 65 Dart. With that said I cannot comment on your setup but will say i had problems on a few beetles that where blow through that just did not like any boost over 8 psi on a vac secondary carb. It would actualy move the secondary flaps under boost and gave us fits.. Changed it to a manual secondary carb and not a problem. This is with the boost refernce in the proper location.

Oh and by the way.. Nice setup.. I am going to do a front mount with my dart as I want to keep it looking like grannys car..

I was originally thinking on a vacuum secondary carb (saw a few big wigs using them) but choose this Demon double pumper instead. I'm glad I did, I just need to get the bugs worked out of it yet. I haven't worked on it for a month or so. Goodluck with your build and send some pics. Later.

What a great read!
I found this doing a search for info on a BG 575 blow through carb.
I'm in australia and in the process of turboing my 1970 Holden LC torana.
I've got a 202ci straight 6 (very similar to a chev inline 6).
I would love to get into the 11 seconds! But its gonna be a while till the old girl is all back together, in the process of starting a bare metal respray aswell!
I'm leaning towards a the 575 carb, unless someone can give me a better option for around the same price.
Finding a read like this gives you that inspiration you need to keep at it!

Sweet, I love it. Glad your inspired even though it isn't a Slant 8) . I tried the secondaries the other day and they worked. The bigger cube seems to pull the fuel thru better. I guess I'm pretty happy with it now. Added 3 more psi of boost and the #14 meth jet and she flat scoots now. Running mid 11's on the A/F also. My closest track is closed for the year, I'd really like to post some quicker ET's :D It's so tempting with boost you know. Later.
