Post subject:  4-27-14 Ruster Is alive again!

Success!

Ruster is Now Running On the Megasquirt 3 Control ECU Without Faults.
I still Have some small things to do like wire up the ammeter and re locate the alternator feed wire, but Ruster is ready for some test hits to see if everything is functioning and holds together without throwing belts or catching on fire.

Yesterday I corner scaled it( BIG THANK YOU LOU!!!!!!), then Today I aligned the front end and changed the oil. and gave everything a good pre season once over.

Here are some pics..

The scales revealed that Ruster is still a bit heavier than I would Like, and that my calculations were quite a bit off.
I thought that it would come in near 2088#, however the scales revealed that Ruster was sneakin some wing dings and doughnuts when I wasn't looking!
Scales said 2139#.. some more lightening must be done next winter!

I will Get a test session in this week weather pending.. of course.

But heres' the Pics that I have been withholding from all of you's slant paparazzi's.

Trigger Wheel and Hall Sensor Mount details: I had Originally made one(hall sensor Mount) from aluminum, But I had quite a bit of trouble with it and I was chasing my tail a bit trouble shooting, so I broke down and made one from steel.. Maybe one day I will make a billet AL one.. But with no access to a mill or latte it sucks to have to rely on others to do these small bits for you..$$$

You da man Greg! Now with all that new bling on there you need to treat yourself to a new piece of dryer duct for the carb!!

You have done a huge amount of work over the winter. I hope it runs well and you can bring it to Mason Dixon.

that's what you think... I don't believ it until I have 10 time slips with all varying track and weather wind conditions that start with 11.xx.

Well i went to to track and Have some bugs to work out.

I don't even remember what the et's were... just bad/ slow I was struggling to stay in the 12's with High speed misfires etc...

Not sure if its a trigger wheel / Hall sensor error , Maybe the coils need more dwell, or possibly The spark Plugs I used dont work well with this engine combo( the old plugs were removed as they were fuel soaked from Trying to start the car when I first installed MS3/ Trigger wheel)

The Vacuum pump works too well. I have a regulator on Order to tame the vacuum pump, & suck less oil out of the engine. I learned that too much vacuum in the crankcase might not be good. I might have to rework some of the internal valve cover baffling as well. Also I have some of the original (pre Coil on Plug) spark plugs on order too. We'll see if I can get it sorted out.

I was just going to post to be careful with the vacuum pump. Get too much and it can draw oil away from the pickup and hurt the crank. I believe the number is no more than 14 inches.

Thanks for the insight.

That's why I am going to get the regulator.

One of the track techs was nice enough to spend some time and offer up some suggestions that correlate with yours Dennis.

I am new to all this Vacuum Pump Stuff.. so live and Learn!

LOTS of new changes to that car, so teething is unavoidable. Congrats on getting it fired and to the track! See you M-D, Dr. Ruster, with your Frankenstein or without...

That looks great Greg. I want to ask you sometime about how the Mega Squirt is configured for your ignition, and what type of coils you are using.

Greg, I too was having a high speed miss when I put the new car together. I went after everything electrical and still had it. Not saying this is your case,, Mine was in the jetting. and not what you would think. Instead of a lean pop, it was too rich. After chasing my tail for a while, and as a old schooler(not having a air/fuel meter) I took a chance and started with metering rods leaning a little at a time. Just a thought..
