i had to unbolt my power steering to squeeze my header in and in the process i unbolted the single bolt (nut? D.W.) on top of the power steering unit. i put it back but i was just wondering wut that bolt does. if you dont know wut im talking about its the bolt that sits on top of a half sphere spacer thing. someone told me its the adjustment but im not sure. any help would be appreciated. thanx.
That adjusts the sector shaft backlash. This is one of the sources of play in a power steering gear. As long as you held the center screw with an allen wrench as you re-tightened the nut, everything is OK. If not, you're probably still OK as long as your steering does not bind, it probably had some play in it to start with. To properly adjust: Loosen nut. Tighten adjusting screw until sector shaft backlash (play) just dissappears. Note: The backlash can be most easily felt by rocking the pitman arm side-to-side with the steering centerlink disconnected. This is usually not feasible or convenient, so just tighten it (or loosen it if you previously overtightened) until you feel it start to bind at the steering wheel as it goes over center (it's tightest point), then loosen it until it does not bind. Re-tighten nut.
