Our 65 slant is starting to bog during acceleration and twitches during idle.
I yanked the carb to check the accelerator pump circuit, all ok there.
Could this be the points deteriorating already?

Electronic conversion is not in the budget right now and I'll have to borrow a dwell meter to change the points.

Opinions please.

Since your still running points, yes, its time for a tune up. Points start to wear as soon as you start the car for the first time after replacing them. As points wear, the gap widens and changes your dwell, and as a result the timing changes. If you gap the points to .020" your dwell should be ok.

It's not like you have to do everything again, it's only a points cleaning and adjustment. Just think how good you'll get at doing it at this rate.

The electronic upgrade is $50-$100 and about 1 whole day's work. You can do a lot of points adjustments for that price.

My hat's off to you for "Keeping it old school".

Points (and their adjustment) should last a LOT longer than 8,000 miles. And no, you don't need a dwell meter to adjust the points. It's a nice thing to have, but not strictly necessary. Also (Eric): The point gap NARROWS as the points wear, it does not widen. The rubbing block is the wear surface.

There are all kinds of variables that we don't know. What-all did you do at the last tuneup? Please be very specific, down to brand of parts installed, settings and specs, etc.
