what about the head? shaving just .040 off a stock head raises compression on a stock slant six from 8.7:1 to 8.9:1. also porting.

It all depends on how far you want to get into it plus free time:
With a decently built head, headers (with a single 2.5'' or dual 1 7/8'' pipes depending on your headers), a supersix intake setup, elecrtic fans (frees ~15hp), elecrit ignition, new timing chain. you could get 220hp +\-. None of this will work though unless you have a "Tuner Slapper" sticker on your car.

another power free-er-up-er is the rear end. a simple gear swap and give you lots of low-end pop (great for slapping tuners at the light or fast 0-60's). if you any accesories running off the car like power steering or A/C, take them out (or at least remove the belt for them). those use hp to run. "ohh boo hoo its hot, or its too hard to turn the wheel unless im moving: roll down the window and use yer muscle"

all this can be gotten at a pick-n-pull or similar junkyard for less than 250$
except for that whole head part, thats up to you. with these changes you could have a high 16 second tuner slapper.

a 50hp No2 shot could be fun too for a stock sl6 ;)

Or, stick a 200 horse shot of nitrous and scare the heck out of the person your racing when you engine suddenly explodes

Guess you should do that in a car you don't like first though...

Before you get too excited about the potential of the 225 remember that the 145HP figure was the original pre 1972 SAE Gross Horspower amount and not the SAE Net Horsepower in use today. The net amount is aproxiamtely 80% of the the old gross figure. That net horspower is measured at the flywheel with all engine accessories attached (Alternator, P.S. pump, AC etc.) So your starting point in today's Horsepower is really about 115HP assuming that Chrysler wasn't stating "Advertised" HP. In truth I'll bet the average 225 that came off the line made no more than 135-138HP which would put you down to 110 Net. That 110 Net translates to about 90 at the rear wheels and that's down into Honda Civic territory :(

Even the original Hyper Pack 225s were probably only making just over 200 Gross HP (160 net) so if you get your engine to that point without the juice you'll be doing pretty good. Good luck with your project.

Here's a good webpage that discusses the changes in horspwer ratings.

With a straight six, torque is your biggest virtue, not horsepower. Even with 2.76 gears, my Duster is a lot quicker off the line than my girlfriend's Civic (which isn't much of a car to start with :? ). To me torque is much more important than horsepower because torque is the stuff you feel when taking off from a stoplight.

stock head with the 390 Holley it had on there at 8.2:1 CR. The engine put out 101 hp @ 3000rpm (thats 80mph)

Now that I have a 4 bbl edelbrock 500 and it breathes alot better, redoing the engine and milling it .100 and getting 9.2:1, after doing my head with a 5 angle valve job 1.70/1.40 valves, and blending the bowls and mild porting, the engine should be well over 230hp.

Same cam profile MP .436 cam on the first engine, Isky .438 on the new motor.

Next modification; Nothing, im happy with her as my daily driver

72 short block (used and abused)
mild head porting with stock valves and fresh springs
stock cam
stock non lockup 904 transmission
supersix with BBD carb
Hardly any exhaust, but stock manifold
stock 7 1/4 highway gears
slightly bigger than factory tires (uuuugh, but not for long)
really nice electronic dist with custom advance curve.
No pollution anything
no weight reduction
power steering
power brakes

All this strapped into a 1980 dodge aspen 2 door and only 1 day at the track to test and tune = best time of 18.96

I suspect that an electric fan, remove power steering, weight reduction, smaller tires, 2.91 sure grip rear, and a rebuilt shortblock will have me in the mid 17s by late summer. (it's all sitting in my garage if I can just get a few free days to install it all. )

A little better cam in the shortblock might even do better, but you get the idea. May not beat every tuner on the block, but it's very consistant and bulletproof.
