Timing is correct....but still backfiring through the carb under load

Have you checked the valve lash? A tight valve can cause that. (tight lash or a sticking guide or a flat cam lobe)

Also a worn distributor shaft can cause the timing to "move around", is the mark steady as you rev up the engine?
