I've got a camshaft that I can't ID. I believe is a hydraulic /6 cam, but need some help. On the end of the cam is stamped in small font: 869410. also on the shaft itself is stamped "CWC D-19" Half of it is painted in purple, other half dark grey. Anyone know what it fits or some specs on it?

Thanks!

MJ

869410 purple/grey is the famed camshaft that makes your slant-6 get 60 mpg and go from 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds with the A/C and parking brake on, on odd Tuesdays of even months under a full moon -- and all on regular gas.

All of those were supposed to be melted down. Guess they missed one. Now that you've gone and blabbed about having it, I'm sure you'll be hearing from Big Oil's operatives any day now about it.

:-D (If two guys in a clapped-out '74 ex-cop Monaco show up wearing sunglasses and claiming to be on a mission from God, those aren't Big Oil's operatives.)

Just by looking? Don't believe it's possible.

Will using a hydraulic cam with solid lifters hurt anything?
Or the other way around?

Using a hydro cam with solid lifters *may* cause the lifters to be noisy when the lash is actually set correctly. They'll only get quiet if the lash is too tight. Most solid cams have a "pre-lift" ramp to help take up the lash clearance quietly, hydro cams don't.

I don't know of any issues going the other way.

This matches my understanding of the theoretical "Will it run or will it trash itself?" question. But, there's also the "Is it a good idea?" question. Hydro and solid cams have very different profiles to match the operating characteristics of those two lifter types (and roller cams have yet a different kind of profile), so it's pretty much never a good idea to mix and match.

So really if we can't ID it via this number scratched on it, I would have to take it to a cam shop and have them read it to find out the specs.

Any idea on what this would cost? I hate to waste a perfectly good cam but also to simply stick one in without any knowledge of what it is!
