How does the knob come off the lever?, is it pressed on or does it screw on. I don't want to bugger it up trying to change it out. This is on a 73 valiant. Thanks!

Auto or Manual trans?
Console or Column shift?

Most knobs are just bolted, if not, below knob must be some type of cover, unlock it and allen screws are there, just loose them and you can get your knob off.

Sorry, it is a colum shift automatic. This is the stock shift lever.

The in theory just un-bolt it, meaby you will need to use some liquid wrench to make it more easy to remove.

If you remove the lever from the column it might make things easier. Done my driving out the role pin that holds it to the column.

I've rebuilt the steering columns for the TidewaterMoparClub giveaway cars and always treated the auto shift lever and knob as a single unit; they aren't meant to come apart as far as I could tell.

When the assembly looked rough, I just scrounged a better looking one off of any handy RWD Mopar and used it - it always fit fine.

In my '77 AMC, the knob broke off revealing a splined shaft underneath, and I bought a generic HELP! (GM) knob and epoxied it in place. I would be surprised if the Mopar one isn't similar.

I suggest you get another lever+knob; then attack the rougher of the two w/ a hammer and smash the plastic apart. I doubt you'll get it apart any other way.

I've used metal polish and fine abrasive to shine up the shafts.

knob is heated in almost boiling water then pressed on. If you wanna take it apart for rechroming the lever, just dip the knob in very hot water for a while, and then (with a damp cloth) spin it while you pull it from the lever. usually takes 2 or 3 dips in hot water to do the job. This way you can keep your original vintage knob and fancy rechrome your lever. The procedure is the same for intalling it back except that you spin/push instead os spin/pull. Duh... but anyways, I rather give more info than needed.
