Post subject:  tie rod -center link removal
I need to drop the tie rod assembly and possibly the center link so I can squeeze the header in...I want to continue using the tie rod till I get a chance to replace the whole front suspension with new parts later. Would I use a tie rod puller rather than the pickle fork way? This is on a 1970 duster with slant 6 and manual 3 speed and no power brakes and steering.the header is a MP 6 into 1...thanks...Jerry

Just asking, but why do you need to separate the steering? My MP header went into my Duster from the top. :shock:

Post subject:  Yes - always use the puller
I believe a pickle fork is only used to DESTROY things. The
tie rod puller, carefully used leaves the tie rod end and usually
even the boot usable.

I remember on my 68 dart 170 with clifford 6:1 headers I had to
run the steering linkage between the tubes - sure made it a pain
to work with that setup. Also bottomed out on the smallest bumps.

Thanks relic-lover, i thought the tie rod remover was the way to do it.

slantzilla..i tried to put the headers in last year, and just kept bumping in things.. the header assembly is pretty bulky and long.it looks like the tie rod center link is in the way. I didn't try it without the starter, as it looks like it wasn't in the way. How did you manage to squeeze it in...did you do it from the bottom? come to think of it, I didn't try it with turning the wheels, maybe it will clear that way, as it may move the tie rod-center link enough out of the way..

I am willing to tried any suggestions....thanks guys ...Jerry

I just laid it in from the top. With the manifolds and exhaust out there is gobs of room. Trans cooler lines do have to be rerouted though. :shock:
