So, I'm told the lower end of my engine is going out. The mechanic said the crankshaft is moving back and forth.

Is this something I could isolate and fix, in a way that would save me time and more importantly money vs doing a full rebuild?

Thanks for the input.

Not really, once you open the motor up, you will commonly find that it all needs done. You will not be saving any money to do it half now and half later. Usually if you do half now, you will have to do it ALL again later.

Sucks to hear, but better than throwing your money/time away.

Not saying that you could NEVER have a situation where just that one part could be fixed, but if you tear into it with that in mind, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

How far is it moving? It is supposed to have a little fore and aft movement. That is the clearance on the thrust bearing.

If it is moving a lot, then the thrust bearing/crank face are worn out.

Spec is somewhere around 0.015" max. Mine was 0.011" on my 64 motor.
